PLEASE NOTE - This position may require temporarily relocation to other TONHC Facilities: Sells Hospital, Santa Rosa Health Center, San Simon Health Center, and San Xavier Health Center.

Position Summary:

This position is responsible for receiving medical emergency and non-emergency calls and recording significate information. In addition, the Medical Services Dispatcher dispatches, assigns, and schedules field unit vehicles, equipment, and personnel via radio, telephone, computer, and other communications equipment.

Scope of Work:

This position serves as a dispatcher in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) of the Tohono O'odham Nation Sells Hospital, Emergency Medical Services. The incumbent's direct supervisor sets the overall program objectives/operations and assigns specific tasks to independently handle routine and non-complicated situations. The supervisor is available to provide advice and assistance on a novel and complex problems or concerns.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Answers incoming emergency and non-emergency calls for medical services.
  • Handles or directs calls to appropriate contact; based on experience, training, policies, and procedures.
  • Dispatch, assign, and schedule filed unit vehicles, equipment, and personnel.
  • Compiles and maintains information for EMS logs and reports.
  • Gathers and distributes information covering the scope of EMS services.
  • Collect, analyze, and prioritizes information received.
  • Transmits, records, and receives messages between divisions of own agency and other law enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Maintains and ensures that computer and radio equipment is operational and functional at all times.
  • Conveys phone messages; responds to requests from other employees and the public; and provides routine public information.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned and contributes to a team effort.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of the Tohono O'odham culture, customs, and traditions.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, tribal laws, regulations, and requirements.
  • Knowledge of the appropriate use and care of radio, telephone, computer, and other communications equipment.
  • Knowledge of the regulations, policies, and procedures associated with the operations and provisions of the EMS Services.
  • Skill in preparing clear, concise, accurate, and complete written reports.
  • Skill in providing superior customer service to external and internal customers.
  • Skill in communicating effectively, courteously and clearly and speaking distinctly, and responding promptly.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally.
  • Ability to operate radio communication equipment.
  • Ability to remain calm and handle emergency situations.
  • Ability to exercise tact and diplomacy in emergency situations.
  • Ability to handle psychological stresses of work.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with the general public, tribal government and other law enforcement and Public Safety agencies.
  • Ability to maintain privileged confidential information.
  • Ability to work independently and meet strict time lines.
  • Ability to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or General Education Diploma; and two years' of work experience as a communications operator or dispatcher, or an equivalent combination of training, education, and work experience in communications which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.

Licenses, Certifications, Special Requirements:
  • Must possess and maintain a current EMS Dispatcher certification from an accredited EMS training program/course.
  • Must have current certification in Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
  • Upon recommendation for hire, a criminal background and a National FBI fingerprint check are required to determine suitability for employment, including a 39-month driving record.
  • May require possessing and maintaining a valid driver's license (no DUIs or major traffic citations within the last three years).
  • If required, must meet the Tohono O'odham Nation tribal employer's insurance requirements to receive a driver's permit to operate program vehicles.
  • Based on the department's needs, incumbents may be required to demonstrate fluency in both the Tohono O'odham language and English as a condition of employment.
