Department: Industrial Operations

Reports To: Project Manager

Salary Type: Hourly, Non-exempt

Location: Irwindale, CA

Pay: $27.75 an hour

Position Summary:

The fabrication technician uses specialized equipment, such as metal welding or soldering tools, to build components for a variety of products. As a fabrication technician, your duties are also to repair and provide maintenance on mechanical equipment, perform routine inspections of the tools and equipment, and train people on how to care for the machines that we use in our production centers.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Follow good manufacturing practices, personal protective equipment requirements, and safety guidelines.
  • Knowledge and understanding of how to maintain a safe work environment
  • Works safely around moving equipment and conveyors in wet environment
  • Comply with SQF Regulatory Programs
  • Maintain a clean work area
  • Prepares working plans and materials for constructive or repair welding from drawings, blueprints or other written specifications by selecting appropriate metal materials and welding rods, and laying out, measuring and drawing guidelines on metal materials such as pipe, tubing or sheets of nickel, brass, aluminum, stainless steel and various irons.
  • Must have working knowledge of basic Protective Equipment Requirements as they apply to maintenance personnel.
  • Cuts, grinds, bends or drills metals into various shapes by selecting appropriate torch tips, and adjusting and directing a metal lathe, Bridge Port, metal bender or the flame of a hand-held or stationary oxygen/gas or arc cutting torch.
  • Must be knowledgeable in equipment Lock-Out/Tag-Out requirements. Must not by-pass Safety Devices under any circumstance.
  • Fabricates unique or prototype equipment or component parts and modifies existing equipment by selecting the appropriate welding machine or torch, rods and torch tips, adjusting valves, electrical currents and other variable factors according to the type of metal used
  • Must be knowledgeable in the proper use of portable fire extinguishers.
  • Soldering, brazing or welding prepared metal materials using standard or precision arc-air, arc or gas methods.
  • Must be knowledgeable of safe lifting techniques, and expected to ask for help if the item to move is too heavy.
  • Repairs or reconstructs defective, damaged, fatigued or worn metal equipment, fixtures, or component parts of equipment using appropriate welding or soldering techniques and equipment.
  • Must use Slip-resistant footwear due to the nature of the environment: Wet floors, cold and probably some icing/debris.
  • Adjusts, cleans and makes minor repairs to assigned cutting and welding tools/equipment as necessary in order to maintain tools/equipment in operating condition. Receives instructions, prints, and work orders for the job and plans details of work, procedure, tools, man-hours and material required.
  • Must use/wear/follow PPE, and GMP compliance as needed, including but not limited to: Hair/Bear net, Boots, Clean Smock, Waterproof Rubber Gloves, Plastic sleeves, Cut resistant gloves, eye & hearing protection, face shield, PPE to handle Chemicals when applicable, etc.
  • Uses burning equipment to dismantle assemblies and to cut material to size and shape.
  • Must be aware of potential hazards such as: Paper/knife cuts, Slip/falls due to wet floors, Pinch Points/Contusions, Chemical exposure (chlorine), Back/Arms/Legs sprains.
  • Keeps equipment and work area clean and orderly
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to read, write and speak English; comprehension of basic math.
  • Basic computer skills and ability to multitask.
  • Willingness and flexibility to work in a cold, wet, fast-paced, 24 hour plant environment.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, ability to climb stairs numerous times a day.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.
  • GED/High School Diploma. Two years of Full-time welding experience OR successful completion of an approved two-year welder apprenticeship program in lieu of the required experience, and formal

Physical Work Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, this position entails use of ladders and catwalks to reach production equipment, regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to extreme cold for extended periods of time. The associate frequently works in high, precarious places. The associate is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
