Job Description

The Staff Accountant will play a key role in supporting our financial operations by performing day-to-day operations of the US Office and supporting global initiatives as requested. The Staff Accountant will support responsibilities such as day-to-day accounting, monthly closing entries, payroll processing, financial reporting, state registrations, and financial compliance.

The Staff Accountant reports to the Director of Finance and may also receive instruction from other MSI finance leaders. The Staff Accountant will work closely with organizational leadership and staff, as well as Global Funding Department and Global Support Office colleagues, to ensure a supportive, compliant, and financially sound work environment. This is a full-time role based out of the Washington, DC office with the possibility of some remote work.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with financial management tasks on both the cash receipts and cash disbursement cycles, such as preparing credit card statements, tracking expenses, processing invoices for payment, and depositing donations.
  • Assist with preparing financial reports, monthly close entries in the SUN environment, monthly account and intercompany reconciliations, and year-end audit/990 preparation.
  • Assist the Director of Finance with compliance and keeping MSI US in good financial standing in areas including but not limited to Worker's Compensation insurance, state payroll tax and charitable registrations, financial regulations, and global requests for support.
  • Generate semi-monthly payroll to be approved by the Director of Finance.
  • Help set up employees, contractors, and payees in various financial systems.
  • Administer and manage MSI US’s procurement process and vendor contracts list.
  • Help with maintaining databases and filing systems, both electronic and physical.
  • Assist the Director of Finance with annual budgeting processes.
  • Regular coordination with the London-based Donor Finance Team in updating donor finance pipeline reports for the monthly Executive Team pack. 
  • Assist with monthly review of Global Funding Department expenditure budgeting, tracking and reporting.
  • Preparation of visuals/reports for donor deep dives, donor meetings, or supporting information that fundraising teams might want/need for fundraising events.
  • Help review, maintain, and update policies and procedures related to MSI US finance.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications

  • Three to five (3 – 5) years of financial support experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as accounting and finance, or equivalent experience.
  • Knowledgeable of general accounting principles and basic understanding of financial analysis.
  • Outstanding interpersonal and communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficient in Microsoft applications, especially Excel. Able to learn and be comfortable with new platforms/applications.
  • Excellent attention to detail, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills
  • Strong project management skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities, meet tight deadlines, and deliver high-quality work.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, collaborating with colleagues across different departments and time zones.
  • Commitment to MSI US' mission and values, including a deep understanding of and respect for women's rights and reproductive health.

Preferred

  • Non-profit and/or international experience.
  • Power BI knowledge
