Position Summary:

We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer who will be responsible for designing conveyors, robotic equipment, and other industrial machinery. You will also be responsible for the considering the entire product lifecycle when making design decisions.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Learn about Custom Metal Designs’ product lines, engineering processes, and manufacturing capabilities.
  • Design industrial product handling machinery, including:

Conveyor systems

Integrated robotic systems

Packaging machines

Custom shop tools/equipment

  • Lead all steps of the product design process, including:

Conceptual design

Engineering calculations

Complete 3D CAD models, from individual parts to top-level assemblies

Detailed 2D CAD manufacturing, assembly, & installation drawings

Complete Bills of Materials (BOMs)

Complete PDF drawing package & top-level assemblies

  • Support engineering projects throughout the entire production lifecycle, including presence on the manufacturing floor.
  • Provide engineering support to other departments, including purchasing, production planning, and sales.
  • Follow the engineering change notice (ECN) process to incorporate feedback into existing designs.
  • Analyze design & process changes to improve performance, lead-time, and cost effectiveness.
  • Comply with all quality policies, specifications, regulations, and instructions.
  • Maintain product and company reputation by complying with federal and state regulations.
  • Follow ISO requirements and safety procedures.
  • Complete work priorities as assigned by supervisors.
  • Perform other such duties as may be required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 5+ years’ experience as a mechanical engineer, engineering tech, or similar discipline.
  • 5+ years’ experience using SolidWorks 3D CAD and PDM software.
  • Experience making data-driven design decisions to meet overall goals.
  • Experience working in a manufacturing environment.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes, including metal fabrication, sheet metal forming, machining, and grinding.
  • Working knowledge of mechanical engineering concepts, including statics, dynamics, fluid mechanics, and thermodynamics.
  • Excellent math skills, including advanced geometry, calculus, and physics.
  • Strong critical thinking and data-driven problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collaborate as part of a team and work independently to complete tasks in a timely manner.
  • Well-organized, analytical, and detail oriented.
  • Strong verbal, graphical, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment.
  • Consistently uphold excellent housekeeping standards in the workplace.
  • Exhibit and sustain enthusiasm, initiative, and a sense of pride in all tasks and responsibilities.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • Knowledge of pneumatics and control systems.
  • Familiarity with material handling and packaging technology.
  • Familiarity with industrial and collaborative robots, end of arm tooling.
