Summary: The Tax Content Product Manager will be primarily responsible for leading the strategy and prioritization of industry and geographic tax needs as they apply to Vertex’s products. This role will drive the direction of company’s content roadmap for and translate the roadmap into key tax features (i.e., geographic region, product or service categories, target customers, tax impositions, etc.) to enable Tax Research, Commercial Software Engineering (CSE), and product and solution Product Management team members execute their research and product development. Through this role’s industry & geographic expertise, they will also serve as the ultimate content expert and support Tax Research, Sales, Marketing, and Customer Success as needed in research, sales, marketing, and customer success efforts. Responsibilities
  • Act as industry and geographic Subject Matter Expert (SME 
  • Contribute expert perspective to the development of business strategies related to Indirect Tax content.
  • Support the review, interpretation, and testing of complex tax scenarios to create and maintain the tax rules within the software assuring accurate tax results. 
  • Support and advise on matters of U.S. / International law and taxation.
  • Translate Content roadmap into key tax features such as geographic regions, tax imposition, returns filing, target customers, etc.
  • Produce thought leadership documents and on-line materials related to Indirect Tax as required.
  • Develop internal educational resources and processes on Indirect Tax. 
  • Product / Content Direction
  •  Influence product / content direction and roadmaps for as it applies to Vertex’s products.
  • Determine tax content requirements through an in-depth understanding of customer and partner needs.
  • Partner with Tax Research, Customer Success, and Commercial Software Engineering to establish prioritized Product and Content Roadmaps.
  • Partner with Tax Research and Commercial Software Engineering Agile teams to breakdown the content roadmap into manageable amounts of work in Program Increment (PI) planning.
  • Distill Product and Content roadmap into actionable work for Tax Research team through development of Epics, Features, and User Stories.
  • Evaluate and prioritize customer requested content and product enhancements (related to content).
  • Partner with Product Management and Marketing to infuse content materials into product marketing.
  • Serve as client-facing, subject matter expert in partnership with Vertex’s sales team to drive business growth.
  • Work directly with customers and partners to understand and translate their needs into content requirements. 
  • Support direct selling & marketing efforts to select and/or targeted strategic accounts as needed or based on upcoming new content releases.
 
Required Skills
  • Minimum of 15 years of business-related experience in a multi-jurisdictional tax environment. 
  • Minimum of 10 years in tax industry experience. 
  • Minimum of 10 years of project management experience.
  • Strong depth and breadth of Indirect Tax laws and technology and how they combine into appropriate tax process management solutions. 
  • Excellent understanding of Indirect Tax and business trends and ability to translate into company solutions.
  • Thorough understanding customer needs and translating them into solution requirements.
  • Expert understanding of third party "bolt on" sales tax calculation engines.
  • Ability to define relevant key tax features such as geographic region, product or service categories impacted, industry and segmented impacted, target customers, tax impositions, and return filing requirements for Tax Research.
  • Ability to guide Scrum teams through Program Increment (PI) planning. 
  • Creating content forecasts to implant within product forecasts.
  • Provide customer facing departments with content enhancements and initiatives details.
  • Excellent communication skills (oral, written, problem solving & presentation) to various audience's executives, customers, government groups and industry analysts.
  • Ability to apply broad expertise or unique knowledge and professional concepts to develop resolutions to critical issues.  
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office packages.
  • Former Agile experience a plus. 
 
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Business, Tax, or Finance, or equivalent experience.
  • Advanced degree or CPA preferred.
