Essential Job Functions:

  • Evaluate residential, commercial and industrial plans for compliance with current codes, local ordinances and zoning requirements by review and analysis in comparison to construction guidelines.
  • Maintain knowledge of zoning, health, safety and building codes and regulations.
  • Development Codes, Planned Development Ordinances, and any other manuals or guidelines adhered to and/or adopted by the governing municipality. This may include plan review for other building permits such as alterations, demolition, parking lots, fences, and curb cuts.
  • Provide applicants with plan review status, other information, and guidance to obtain required permits..
  • Update and maintain numerous reference materials, manuals, brochures, internal forms and checklists
  • Research code updates and study new code requirements
  • Inform contractors, specifiers and other applicable stakeholders when design and construction code discrepancies occur
  • Attend Design Development Meetings and Pre-Construction Meetings as needed. Attend design and pre-construction meetings as required.
  • Maintains regular and punctual on-site attendance
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Job Requirements

Minimum Qualifications/Acceptable Equivalency:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Three years of plan review and/or three years of building inspections experience
  • Must currently hold R3 and B3 certifications with the International Code Council

OR

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field

OR

  • Any combination of related education, experience, certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

  • Display knowledge of construction principles and practices
  • The essential functions of this position require the frequent use of a computer, related software, telephone, and various other office related equipment.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with stakeholders at all levels.
  • Ability to maintain professional behavior with customers and co-workers
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers by responding to requests in a timely and professional manner.
  • Adhere to building and zoning codes, regulations and ordinances, by inspecting residential and commercial building plans and specifications, ensuring building code standards are met, entering data accurately into computer, and studying and researching new or alternative code items
  • Provide information and assistance by conferring with contractors, applicants, homeowners, architects, engineers, etc to explain and interpret minimum code requirements and restrictions, resolving concerns and returning telephone calls.
  • Determine if building plans submitted meet all codes and ordinances as adopted by the governing municipality
  • Maintain accurate records by interpreting plans and specifications, detecting non-compliance, seeking solutions toward compliance, making and maintaining permanent records retention, and completing plan review notifications.

  • Texas Plumbing Inspector License

Physical Requirements:

The employee is regularly required to have full use of hands and arms and must be able to speak and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with hands and arms and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.

Environmental Factors:

The essential functions of this position are performed in an office environment.
