Deputy Chief of Screening- Magistrate

ABOUT THE ORLEANS PARISH DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE (OPDA)

Jason Rogers Williams took office as the Orleans Parish District Attorney on January 11, 2021, and is building a 21st-century prosecutors' office with a team of the best and brightest lawyers from around the country and a mission of being as smart on crime as the office has historically been tough on crime. OPDA aims to increase public safety through the ethical, consistent, and zealous enforcement of the law.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) represent the State of Louisiana in criminal matters before the Courts with jurisdiction in Orleans Parish. The Deputy Chief of Screening for Magistrate helps provide oversight of the Assistant District Attorneys (ADAs) assigned to the Magistrate Court. Magistrate operations involve morning, evening, weekend, and holiday court dates.

The primary function of Magistrate Court is First Appearances. Magistrate may also handle extradition hearings, rules and status hearings, misdemeanor bench trials, preliminary hearing, and other pre-acceptance matters. Duties of Magistrate ADAs include, but are not limited to, docket management, case resolution, and trial work on misdemeanor cases.

This position is held by an attorney licensed to practice law in Louisiana, and reports to the Chief of Screening.

QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS

• Member of the Louisiana Bar in good standing
• Comfort with technology, including proficiency with Microsoft Office suite
• Ability to work flexible hours, including some weeks of over 40 hours and weekends/holidays
• Dependability in attendance and work product
• Effective coach and mentor
• Public speaking ability and effective communication skills
• Extensive knowledge of Louisiana criminal law and procedure
• Extensive trial/courtroom experience
• Experience in criminal case screening, case management, and case processing
• Demonstrated ability to manage a high caseload and voluminous case files in a fast-paced environment while also supervising the work of others
• Ability to foster solid and sustainable working relationships with outside agencies and partners

SALARY AND BENEFITS

Starting salary range $87,000 - $105,000. ADA hires may be eligible for:
