Summary
With Complete Functional Safety assessments of challenging projects, the FS Engineer will have responsibilities that will range from components up to complex systems including hardware and software assessments based upon client/project requirements (e.g.: IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC 62061).

As a Functional Safety Engineer, you will be responsible for Functional Safety assessments of products or systems in various industries, such as industrial automation automotive or process applications. Your primary focus in this role will be on the functional safety assessments of the design, development, and operation of these products or systems related to IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC 62061, etc.

Responsibilities:

  • Assessment of functional safety concepts and strategies in accordance with relevant standards and regulations (e.g. IEC 61508, ISO 13849, IEC 62061).
  • Review and analyze system architectures, hardware designs, and software implementations to identify potential functional safety issues
  • Perform functional safety verification and validation activities, including functional safety audits, inspections, and testing (e.g. fault insertion tests), to ensure compliance with functional safety standards and requirements.
  • Review functional safety documentation, such as safety plans, safety cases, and safety reports
  • Create test reports, drafts certificates and document test results in reference to the performed assessments
  • Stay up-to-date with the latest developments in functional safety standards, regulations, and best practices, and ensure their incorporation into the product or system development process.
  • Provide guidance and support to project teams on functional safety principles, methodologies, and tools.
  • Support sales and marketing activities to offer TUV Rheinland services to clients
  • Business Travel is maybe required within North America
  • Valid Driver’s License required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Solid understanding of functional safety concepts, principles, and standards (e.g., ISO ISO 13849, IEC 61508).
  • Experience with functional safety methodologies in the development of safety-critical systems or products.
  • Familiarity with safety analysis techniques, such as FMEA (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) or FTA (Fault Tree Analysis).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and address safety-related issues.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of industry-specific safety standards and regulations is a plus.
  • Certification in functional safety, such as Certified Functional Safety Professional (CFSP) or Functional Safety Engineer (TÜV), is desirable.
