Directors possess the knowledge and authority to make decisions on behalf of their areas, often independent of a supervising vice president or chief. They supervise employees and provide guidance for their teams, including clearly communicating strategic goals, fostering trust, promoting professional development, and holding staff and each other accountable. They spend most of their time managing efficient operations, with an eye for opportunities to innovate or integrate technology. Additional priorities include compliance and cross-training to ensure continuity of operations. These staff members report to chiefs or vice presidents.

Position Summary

The Director of Meals on Wheels (MOW) Fleet is a comprehensive and dynamic role that requires an innovative and resourceful out-of-the-box thinker in the field of logistics and transportation. This Director should be inspired by transportation safety and have proficient and welcoming people skills. The Director leads a team of Meals on Wheels drivers to transport meals safely and efficiently within Memphis and Shelby County. Duties include overseeing work schedules, efficiency of transportation routes, managing the budget for vehicle repairs and replacements, proper supervision and training for safe driving standards, and ensuring effective and efficient program compliance.


Major Responsibilities

Develop work schedules and transportation routes for drivers to pick up and deliver meals to the correct locations, ensuring drivers receive proper supervision and training to uphold safe driving standards.

  • Provide training to enhance drivers’ skills and understanding of the program, including Lead Drivers.
  • Plan and implement a proactive hiring/retention plan to ensure delivery goals are met.
  • Facilitate hiring, orientation, and training of drivers in a complete and timely manner.
  • Ensure all drivers have and maintain up-to-date and proper licensure and training.
  • Monitor drivers to ensure adherence to schedules and safe driving and delivery.
  • Monitor GPS tracking via Verizon Connect for driver safety.
  • Conduct performance reviews and provide timely disciplinary action as needed.
  • Plan/lead meetings, both with direct staff and the broader MOW team.
  • Communicate announcements and updates with staff and program leadership effectively and in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrated visionary leadership, including the ability to mentor, influence and motivate others.

Manage and oversee—with safety and efficiency as top priorities—the MOW fleet of approximately 23 vehicles, ensuring safe and effective operation.

  • Develop accident prevention, review criteria, and convene monthly Accident Review Committee
  • Develop methods to decrease costs, improve efficiency, and provide regular reports on budgets, fleet metrics, schedules, maintenance, and fleet progress.
  • Design policies for managing preventive maintenance program using Whip Around software.
  • Monitor and actively address issues reported to and identified by the Risk Management Committee
  • Analyze utilization to develop a purchase/replacement schedule to ensure adequate and safe vehicles are available to conduct the timely delivery of meals daily.
  • Manage/lead safety programs and urgent or emergency repairs as needed.
  • Maximize fuel efficiencies and approve fuel purchases.
  • Ensure proper vehicle licensure/registration and compliance with all local, state, and federal rules, codes, and regulations.
  • Coordinate Electric Vehicle development project.

Manage delivery of meals to approximately 16 congregate nutrition sites and home-delivered clients.

  • Organize staff and tasks to meet program outcomes and needs.
  • Utilize effective communication and strong people skills as an active and positive contributor to a team-oriented environment.
  • Responsible for the assignment of vehicles and drivers and optimum performance in safe food handling, on-time pickup and delivery, hours of duty compliance, driver scheduling, accommodation of special routing needs, and cost control.
  • Work in sync with MOW Billing and Client Services on the coordination of routing.
  • Set an example of trust, accountability, and excellence in client service among MIFA staff and the community.
  • Provide respectful and open-minded leadership and direction by ensuring teamwork and appropriate support and encouragement.

Program management, evaluation, and technology.

  • Oversee program to ensure compliance with federal, state, local and grantor regulations.
  • Monitor monthly fiscal statements to ensure compliance, and assist with annual budget, audits, program evaluation, and develop reports as needed.
  • Monitor operating budget, billing, and invoice payments, and procurement inventory.
  • Develop, implement, and update policies and procedures, work practices, standard operating procedures, and training programs.
  • Actively participate in the MIFA Strategic Plan, Continuous Improvement, TRAC Team, and other projects and meetings with a growth mindset.

Maintain knowledge of technologies, trends, and advancements in the profession through publications/websites and appropriate conferences/training

Other Responsibilities

  • Display good people skills, leadership, and professional conduct that is conducive to teamwork and meeting goals.
  • Ability to interact with people at varying levels of the company.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and executing multiple tasks and completing duties on schedule with little or no supervision.
  • Manage all client information confidentially and discreetly.
  • Be available to work early morning hours, being flexible needed.
  • Deliver meals if necessary.
  • Ability to welcome and respect people of diverse ages and races with sensitivity to civic and cultural issues.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Supervise MOW Drivers, MOW Driver Leads, and MOW Driver Coordinator

Starting Salary $28.00

Requirements:

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required with emphasis in business or logistics
  • Five years or more of fleet management experience .
  • Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) preferred.
  • Two years’ budget experience and/or grant management/program compliance experience
  • Experience with maintenance software (such as WhipAround) and GPS software (such as Verizon Connect) preferred
  • Proficiency at operating desktop/laptop computers, printer, Zoom, and basic software, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel.
