Job Description

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE:

Services and activities provided in accordance with PAT (Parents as Teachers) Program guidelines to develop positive and enduring relationships with families parenting young children.

Parent Educators will ensure families receive consistent research-based, evidence-informed services and that parents are empowered to use the information to create safe and nurturing environments for their children. This position will be located in Joseph Gascon Elementary School.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Utilizes Parents as Teachers evidence-based curricula to conduct personal visits with families with infants and very young children.
  • Conducts comprehensive needs assessments with families and assists them in obtaining needed resources such as health insurance, housing, and low-cost child care through referral and linkage.
  • Maintains a caseload of up to 25 active clients.
  • Meets PAT program’s productivity standards - 48 visits/month during year 1 and no more than 60 visits/month thereafter.
  • Completes and submits progress notes in a 24-hour timeframe utilizing the agency’s electronic health record system (SFDB).
  • Provides guidance and assistance to parents/caretakers on managing child’s behaviors successfully in the context of PAT requirements.
  • Provides guidance and assistance to parents/caretakers on managing familial stressors effectively and successfully within the context of PAT requirements.
  • Provides interagency and intra-agency consultation, communication, coordination and referrals.
  • Identifies and communicates obstacles preventing families from connecting with program and/or referral services.
  • Attends community meetings as requested by management.
  • Bilingual candidates in Spanish strongly preferred. Bilingual in Tagalog, Korean, Indian and Chinese a plus.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Minimum of a bachelor’s degree and 2 years’ previous supervised work experience with young children and/or parents.
  • Must be certified by the National PAT Center annually after completing competency-based professional development – provided at no-cost by the agency.
  • Must demonstrate effective communication and interpersonal skills (outgoing, empathic, non-judgmental, patient, tactful), characteristics considered essential for mastering the program’s five core competency areas (family support & parenting education, child & family development, human diversity with family systems, health, safety & nutrition, and relationships between families and communities).
  • Must complete both the Foundational and Model Implementation trainings before enrolling families and providing direct services.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

Employee may be asked to participate in cross-training programs or pursue additional education or training when it is determined to be in the best interest of the company by the Chief Operating Officer and Chief Executive Officer.

WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in normal office setting. Noise level is moderate with occasional loud outbursts.

REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 50% of the time.
  • Needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office machinery, etc.
  • Constantly operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, (i.e., calculator, copy machine, computer and printer).
  • Constantly communicates with staff.
  • Occasionally operates motor vehicle for business purposes.
