Job Description

Position Title: Principal Budget Analyst

Dept., BU / Section: Financial Planning & Analysis

Reports to: Manager, Financial Planning and Analysis

Location: Atlanta, GA (*On-site)

* Incumbent must work in office in Atlanta four (4) days per week and may work remotely one (1) day per week with manager approval

Summary:

The Principal Budget Analyst develops budgets and financial plans for MEAG Power and 49 Participant organizations by working closely with department leaders across the organization. Functions include creating various annual budgets and 10-year forecasts using financial software. In addition, the Principal Budget Analyst conducts monthly budget to actual monitoring regarding key performance metrics, analyses significant items, and reports findings to management. This position is responsible for the systems necessary to complete the budget process and works closely with programming staff to update systems as needed.

Key Responsibilities/Accountabilities:

  • Prepares the preliminary and final annual budgets with guidance from supervisory staff and department peers. This includes accumulating budgeted costs from across MEAG Power (including debt service, fuel, generation and transmission O&M, capital, and administrative costs). Budgets are prepared at the corporate level as well as for each of the 49 Participants in accordance with Power Sales Contracts and Bond Resolutions. Budgets are also prepared for two Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) customers in accordance with their PPAs.
  • Prepares and analyses multi-year forecasts for use by MEAG Power management, Participants, PPA customers, and rating agencies.
  • Prepares and analyses monthly actual vs. budgeted controllable and non-controllable cost variance reports and provides information to management regarding the variances.
  • Analyzes accounting, financial and operating data to identify trends or deviations from budgeted costs and notifies management of such variances.
  • Reviews billing and accounting transactions to ensure that costs are reflected properly.
  • Maintains the budget system and ensures that the system interfaces effectively with other corporate systems including the General Ledger.
  • Uses professional judgment to make decisions necessary to support corporate and departmental objectives.
  • Assists with department initiatives and special projects as needed.
  • Develops presentations in support of the annual budget process.

Qualifications:

  • Self-motivated, proactive mindset, and ability to work both independently and in a cross-functional team environment
  • A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in accounting or related field such as finance with a minimum of 5 years of work experience.
  • Candidate should possess strong interpersonal skills to be able to work collaboratively with others across the organization and with external personnel.
  • Candidate should understand core electric utility business operations.
  • Thorough knowledge of Microsoft’s suite of office software.
  • Tableau experience a plus.
