Caregiver Training Institute, a division of Bryan University, offers programs in Nursing Assistant (NA-1), CNA-2, and Medication Aide training programs. Our programs are popular and tend to fill up quickly. Our classes are active learning environments filled with a variety of students from pre-nursing students to English language learners, as well as people from all walks of life. You will be making a huge impact on people entering the medical field and teaching quality of care to our future healthcare employees. This is a fun and rewarding job. You will find that many of your students want to become nurses. You are training the next generation of healthcare providers. Recent graduates are not eligible to apply for this position due to OSBN regulations.

This is a part-time flexible teaching position for qualified applicants living in the state of Oregon. This position is scheduled for three (3) days, from 6:00am to 2: 30pm. Please note that class times and days may vary with schedule revisions, holidays, etc. *Multiple part time instructor positions can be combined for more hours.

Pay Range: $36-$40 (LPN) or $44-$48 (RN) per hour DOE

Position Summary of the Part-Time Med Aide Clinical Instructor:

As the part-time med aide clinical instructor, you will be working with one MA student during their clinical rotation helping them understand their role and gain confidence in passing medications to residents in LTC nursing facilities. The following week you would have a new student. This position is scheduled for three (3) days, from 6:00am to 2:30pm. Days scheduled can be tailored to your needs to some extent. We must have the student finish their three (3) days of clinicals in one calendar week.

We do not schedule classes or clinicals on holidays, holiday weekends, and at times the day before and after a specific holiday day. As an example, the day before and the day after Thanksgiving is not generally a scheduled day to teach. We do offer our classes back-to-back for most of the year; we do not run on a trimester or semester basis.

Responsibilities of the Part-Time Med Aide Clinical Instructor:

To be considered for this position you must be an LPN or RN with a current unencumbered license to practice in Oregon. Per OSBN regulations LPN and RN instructors must have at least ONE (1) YEAR of FULL-TIME experience as a licensed nurse. Also, per the OSBN you MUST have no less than 6 months experience in a LTC skilled nursing facility.

Clinical info: This part of the program is assisting your student learn their new skills with residents at a nursing facility while passing their medications. You are their supervisor and will work directly with the student while they pass medications. During the MA clinical the student will begin by passing medication to a few residents. Then every day you will add one or two more residents to their medication routine. You will be at the same facility for the entire clinical. If you are assigned to a new building, there is a scheduled “walk through” that is paid time for you to have a tour and familiarize yourself prior to going into the clinical rotation with your student(s).

Qualifications and Skills: You will be required to complete the documentation as required; this includes delivery of the paperwork to the school on the final day of the clinical. You will offer a professional attitude during all conversations with students and facility staff. You will enforce all policies of the school. Items such as being on time, following the dress code, and the conduct of the student while in the clinical rotation are all under the supervisory role of the nurse instructor. You will provide teaching guidelines for the program materials and help the student to focus and study in preparation for their OSBN board exam. We are looking for nurses who have multiple skill sets and are seasoned in the nursing profession. You will be expected to act in a professional manner, to always be with the student, you must be able to explain curriculum content effectively, and demonstrate all skills to the student as needed. You are their coach and mentor.

Clinical Instructors should also have: An understanding of the role of the CMA as well as their authorized duties, and ability to work with and show the student how to properly pass medications for the patients at the bedside of the facility you are assigned to teach in. This is a physical job. You will be walking the halls and working alongside the student at all times. You will be assisting, mentoring, and coaching the student with all aspects of care including the clinical skills that must be signed off during the clinical rotation. Preference will be given to those nurses who have been previously approved as an instructor through the OSBN or have experience training med techs in assisted living and residential care settings and are flexible with their scheduling needs.

Requirements of the Part-Time Med Aide Clinical Instructor:

To be considered for this position you must be an LPN or RN with a current unencumbered license to practice in Oregon. We prefer nurses with experience in the LTC skilled nursing facility settings. Per OSBN regulations, nursing assistant instructors must have at least ONE (1) YEAR of FULL-TIME experience as a licensed nurse.

  • Nursing: 1 year (Required)
  • Active LPN or RN license in Oregon (Required)
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • Demonstrated proficiency in navigating through a PC
  • Ability to sit or stand in a classroom setting for four to six hours

Training for your new position:

To begin your training, you will meet with the Program Director and be issued the textbook and all other student materials. You will go over your job description according to the Oregon State Board of Nursing

(OSBN) including the Nurse Practice Act regulations for this position. And you will go over the paperwork, general routine of the student in clinicals and other aspects of this position. And finally, you will be scheduled in a clinical rotation with another clinical instructor to learn the routine, paperwork, and documentation, what and how the student learns, and all the aspects of being a thorough instructor, mentor, and advisor for your students.
