Position Summary:
This position entails the electrical project management of multi-million dollar power generation facilities or other types of industrial projects. The candidate will be required to: provide electrical power and control engineering support for the Procurement, Project Development, Construction, and Commissioning teams; help ensure electrical engineering deliverables are completed, on-time, and on-budget while maximizing production efficiencies and output through electrical design, specifications development, equipment installations, troubleshooting, and work to minimize construction commissioning cycle; and ensure that the electrical design is safe, reliable, and meets Codes and Standards. The Senior Engineer will also work closely with the project team in proposal development and participate in customer meetings and presentations.


Position Description:

The Senior Electrical / Senior Controls (I&C) Engineer will oversee the Engineer of Record's (EOR) project multi-disciplinary team to complete the Electrical and Controls Engineering design packages, perform calculations, and develop engineering solutions. The Senior Engineer will typically work on power generation, distribution, utility-scale Power Plant Systems design for new and retrofit installations, and other industrial projects. Project knowledge range includes understanding complex EPC contracts and technical oversight of electrical contractors. The Senior Engineer will also be responsible for managing electrical and control systems for power plants, designing power distribution systems, motor control centers (MCC) with wiring schematics, developing construction specifications, and writing and reviewing equipment specifications.


Responsibilities

  • Participate in the planning and coordinating of conceptual and detailed phases of electrical engineering projects.
  • Manage the electrical engineering process by monitoring the electrical design and ensuring that GPS's engineering subcontract is timely and correct. Ensure the design is consistent with the Engineering, Procurement, & Construction (EPC) contract requirements.
  • Develop, define, and dimension technically and economically feasible applications by performing preliminary engineering/design and coordinating with external vendors and subcontractors to develop designs and technical proposals and determine cost and schedule.
  • Drive the technical due diligence from the project development, implementation, and commissioning phase. This will involve identifying known risks (i.e., technical, construction, price, schedule, environmental, warranties, performance guarantees, etc.); indicate impacts and how they will be addressed and mitigated.
  • Support proposal development by providing input regarding power plant proposals' electrical requirements, including detailed technical evaluation, and developing detailed supporting documentation of supplier quotes and cost optimization derivations.
  • Lead the EOR preparation effort of control systems (DCS and/or PLC), Continuous Emissions Monitoring Lead preparation of instrumentation design deliverables, including Instrument List, Instrument Construction Specifications, Instrument Installation Details, and Instrument Location Plans.
  • Oversee the design control system logic and configuration, graphic interfaces, and Input/Output (I/O) lists.
  • Manage vendor I/O and instrument lists; coordinate I/O to determine the partitioning of the control system hardware.
  • Assist the Project Management Group to support the implementation of projects, as required.
  • Prepare documents and specifications to the extent necessary for inquiries of electrical and instrumentation engineering.
  • Develop comparison studies based on suppliers’ quotations.
  • Negotiate with suppliers on technical aspects of equipment.
  • Coordinate the execution of conceptual and detailed electrical design work.
  • Review basic and detailed technical drawings, documents, and specifications issued by the engineering subcontractor as necessary for the Project ensuring that the designs and installations meet the client's requirements and all the relevant safety regulations.
  • Prepare technical component of procurement contracts for materials and equipment.
  • Provide direction, coaching, and mentoring to entry-level engineers and field electrical associates while driving accountability.
  • Lead or participate in various engineering process improvement procedures.
  • Able to determine root cause and resolution of electrical equipment issues as quickly as possible by utilizing troubleshooting best practices.


Desired Qualifications/Experience:

  • BS in Electrical Engineering, an advanced degree in engineering or construction management.
  • PE Electrical Engineering (or EIT).
  • At least ten (10) years of experience with the design/installation of medium voltage and low voltage power distribution within power plants or industrial facilities.
  • At least seven (7) years of experience with the design/installation of high-voltage transmission equipment.
  • At least seven (7) years of related experience in Instrumentation and Electrical Controls.
  • At least seven (7) years of systems integration experience, preferably in a high-level controls engineering role.
  • Proficient in at least one of the widely used control system platforms, including current and legacy Rockwell systems, Siemens and Schneider, is a plus.
  • Working knowledge of system and equipment grounding requirements (high resistance, building, and isolated grounding).
  • Strong knowledge of applicable codes and standards (NEC, ANSI, NEMA, NFPA, IEEE, & OSHA).
  • Experience with solar or renewable projects is beneficial.
  • Understanding of generation and power factor correction.
  • Experience with eTAP or SKM for performing short-circuit, coordination, and flash hazard studies.
  • Familiarity with AutoCAD or Smart Plant Electrical.
