Position: Residential Services Specialist (Shelter Supportive Housing)

Reports to: Coordinator of Residential Services

Supervises: N/A

Summary of Position:

The Resident Services Specialist is responsible for monitoring the shelter's activities on his/her shift to ensure a safe, manageable, positive-energy living environment. The Residential Services Specialist is a site team member and focuses on the residents and how best to assist them during their stay.

Essential Responsibilities:

Some of the essential responsibilities of the Residential Services Specialist include, but are not limited to:

  1. Ensures a safe and manageable living environment for the shelter residents. Monitors residential areas, is visible, and interacts regularly and informally with shelter residents.
  2. Reads log book from previous shift to note any items that need attention.
  3. Completes essential forms for residents' intake and checkout procedures.
  4. Consult with the Coordinator of Residential Services and case managers regarding residents' personal needs, behavior, and service planning.
  5. Within limits assists residents in processing issues, problem-solving, parenting, etc. Provides a positive role model for residents.
  6. Maintains all required documentation of residents’ activities on a current basis.
  7. Assists in dispensing medication to residents. Daily counts all medications and updates medication log.
  8. Conducts breathalyzer and drug urine screens as needed.
  9. Distributes medication, medication vouchers, taxi vouchers, bus tokens, linens, and toiletries to residents by established procedures.
  10. Answers telephone and routes calls and messages to appropriate staff in a professional manner. Responds to in-person and telephone inquiries from the public about New Hope Housing, Inc. with a courteous and professional demeanor.
  11. Supervises resident chores and resident upkeep of their areas. Informs case manager when there are problems.
  12. Assists with resident activities and programs as assigned.
  13. Accounts for all donations received during the shift. Controls access to donations by residents and secure donations as appropriate. Issue receipts to donors.
  14. Replenishes the supply closet when needed, assists in serving meals when needed, and monitors meal times at the Shelter.
  15. Works flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, and overnights as assigned.
  16. Models a caring, concerned, and respectful attitude toward residents.
  17. Maintains adherence to resident guidelines and upholds shelter procedures.
  18. Is familiar with and complies with the policies and procedures of New Hope Housing.
  19. May orient and/or supervise court-referred volunteers.
  20. Communicates regularly with referring agencies and maintains all required documentation as assigned.
  21. Participates in all staff meetings and required training.
  22. Transports residents in agency vehicles, including the agency's 15-passenger van, on an as-needed basis and only when the supervisor requests.
  23. Light cleaning includes emptying common area trash cans, wiping down counters, mopping common area floors, etc.
  24. Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications:

This position requires the following:

  1. High School Diploma or the equivalent.
  2. Extreme High level of Exceptional Customer Service.
  3. The individual possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to work with homeless individuals while being aware of their needs.
  4. Experience working with adults experiencing homelessness, diagnosed with behavioral health disorders, or are substance dependent.
  5. Counseling and crisis intervention skills.
  6. Clinical experience preferred.
  7. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  8. Computer literate.
  9. To be approved by our insurance carrier, you must successfully pass a background check and possess a valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
