General Summary of Duties: Responsible for assisting in the care, treatment and education of ophthalmic patients.


Examples of Duties: (This list may not include all of the duties assigned)

  • Performs initial patient exams, which include: obtaining ocular, medical, and family histories; measuring, comparing, and testing pupils; measuring visual acuity and eye pressures; refractions; instills ocular medications; applies eye dressings.
  • Performs automated and manual testing; corneal topography, manual refractions, tonometry, Goldman and Humphrey visual fields, OCT, A-Scan for IOL calculation, B-Scan, and ophthalmic photography. Ability to use slit lamp.
  • Provides information to patients concerning procedures and surgery.
  • Maintains, sterilizes, and sets up instruments for minor surgery.
  • Assists doctor with minor surgery and patient monitoring.
  • Maintains knowledge of local and topical anesthesia, post-op drugs and their reactions, and prescription medications.
  • Maintains inventory and stocks clinical and surgical supplies.
  • Must have good general knowledge of demonstrating insertion/removal and care of contact lenses.
  • Maintains equipment in a preventative maintenance program, i.e. proper handling, care, cleaning, changing bulbs, etc.
  • Organizes, cleans and maintains departmental area.
  • Completes and assists with paperwork as appropriate.
  • Maintains patient and office confidentiality.
  • Assists with other office duties as required.

Performance Requirements

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: Knowledge of ophthalmic anesthesia and surgical procedures along with advanced general medical knowledge. Knowledge of ocular medications and their applications. Knowledge of ophthalmic and contact lens technology and techniques including knowing how to conduct necessary ophthalmic testing. Ability to establish/maintain effective relationships with patients, physicians, and staff. Ability to use communication/listening skills and


Education: High school diploma or GED, some college preferred. Basic anatomy

and medical terminology courses helpful.


Experience: Minimum of two years experience in optical/ophthalmic office. Computer experience required.


Certificate/License: Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO).
