Job Title: Lakes Technician

Department: Lakes Management

Reports To: Lakes Ecology & Fisheries Manager

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Pay Grade: 3

Summary Appointed by the Lakes Ecology & Fisheries Manager and assists with managing the lakes within Hot Springs Village (HSV).

Essential duties and responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

  1. Regular attendance is required. Work outside of normal hours on occasion.
  2. Operates motorized equipment including but not limited to various boats, backhoes, skid steers, dump trucks (non-CD), pickup trucks and trailers. Must be able to back a trailer.
  3. Load and unload boats, trucks, and trailers that carry heavy equipment, materials, and supplies.
  4. Assist with testing the lakes on a regular basis for complete chemical, physical, and biological analysis.
  5. Conduct all aspects of lakes management as assigned by the Lakes Ecology & Fisheries Manager.
  6. Assist with maintenance and placement of buoys.
  7. Look for erosion and correct where possible.
  8. Spray chemicals when necessary for aquatic weed and algae control.
  9. Assist in testing for stocking recommendations.
  10. Assist in testing for fertilization of the lakes.
  11. Work with contractors and other departments as assigned by the Lakes Ecology & Fisheries Manager.
  12. Assist with implementation of fisheries management programs on recreational lakes.
  13. Collection of money and distribution of envelopes in collection boxes at boat ramps.
  14. Annual electrofishing and Arkansas State Plant Board certification.
  15. Work with HSV clubs as assigned by Lakes Ecology & Fisheries Manager.
  16. Have a thorough knowledge of lakes rules and regulations.
  17. Will follow Property Owners’ Association (POA) and state safety regulations.
  18. May be required to drive POA or personal vehicle while conducting POA business.
  19. Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications To perform this job safely and successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily and with safety awareness at all times. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Technician must have knowledge of boating operations and maintenance. Education and/or Experience High school diploma or general education degree (GED) minimum. Preferred but not required for the technician to possess a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science, aquatic ecology, or a closely related field; a one year or more of experience at the entry professional level in lake/fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Ability to use and operate heavy equipment is preferred.

Language Skills Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills Ability to add and subtract two digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10’s and 100’s. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume, and distance.

Reasoning Ability Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Requires a valid Arkansas drivers’ license and a clean driving record with proof of liability insurance. Ability to obtain and/or maintain an Individual Commercial or Non-Commercial Pesticide Applicator License. Prefer Certification as a Fisheries Professional by the American Fisheries Society.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but may be above normal at times. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. This is a safety-sensitive position.
