JOB PURPOSE

Riot Games Remote Broadcast Center (RBC) Powered by AWS represents Riot Games’ innovative approach to creating a centralized global broadcast model through a circuit of strategically placed RBCs around the world. First launched under the codename “Project Stryker,” these RBCs work to provide increased capacity for Riot’s esports content and events while also ensuring top-tier quality and consistency across all of Riot’s esports productions.

We are looking for a Jr. Comms Engineer to join our team to construct communication (Comms) pathways between the Remote Broadcast Center (RBC) in Seattle and remote production sites across the World. Internally the role will require the configuring of comms panels located at numerous workstations around the RBC. Full ownership from pre-production, loading in, tech checking, and day-to-today production support will be required. The provision of comfort breaks to Audio co-workers will also fall to the Jr. Comms Engineer.


The ideal candidate will need to be a clear and confident communicator, able to adapt quickly to on-air changes and remain calm under pressure. Their aim will be to ensure a quality visual presentation that informs and inspires viewers and audiences from all around the world.

The successful candidate will be assigned to the RBC owned and operated by Riot Games. In this role, the Comms Engineer will be an integral part of the organization’s Comms team and will take guidance from both Engineering and Audio Departments and will report to the Engineering Lead. They will work across the live esport broadcasts focusing on championships and tournaments from around the world.

RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will have close access to broadcasting footage and, as such, must be managed with great integrity. Professional and best practice behaviors in this role are essential at all times.

  • Maintain the production and technical comms infrastructures within the RBC. Currently the Riedel Director Comms system is in place.
  • Determine methods and procedures on new work efforts for you / your wider team / region and operate with initiative.
  • Refine next day workflows from team and Producer/Director feedback.
  • Load and prep for next day's broadcast. Creating post show documentation highlighting any tasks or issues from Audio.
  • Update and maintain all SOPs and contribute to new SOPs and the sharing of business/skill knowledge.
  • Experience and level of comfort solving highly complex and diverse comm system problems that require an ability to evaluate multiple variables.
  • Maintain control, efficiency, and visibility over the technology, its maintenance, and serve as a point of escalation for the on-site team to analyse, troubleshoot and solve technical problems.
  • Monitor and manage on premise and cloud resources.
  • Coordinate production activities with the other technical Centers.
  • Work with the audio, engineering, and IT teams to create better in-house systems for intercom services, monitoring and enhancing quality of service metrics.
  • Provide comfort support breaks to Audio colleagues working live event mixing.
  • Imparting skill and knowledge to co-workers and colleagues.
  • Performing regular reporting on performance of the Centers by identifying and tracking data for KPIs.
  • Perform other job-related duties and projects as needed and assigned.

EXPERIENCE PROFILE

  • Solid understanding of AoIP, SMPTE 2110 and AES67.
  • Experienced in working with Calrec and Riedel systems.
  • Base knowledge of network engineering, with emphasis on AoIP systems.
  • A minimum of three years’ experience in an operational and broadcast audio/engineering-based role.

COMPETENCIES

  • Understanding of structured cable systems and cable patching and routing.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills - ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both spoken and written forms.
  • Good organizational skills and the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment.
  • Logical thinking with good problem-solving and fault-finding skills in diverse systems.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a live environment and within programme requirements.
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and overnight.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Two years’ experience working in a video/audio ecosystem, with strong fundamentals in live video content production workflows and related production technologies.
  • Bachelor’s degree, technical degree, or deep hand-son experience in an applicable field.

PHYSICAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ability to sit, reach outward or above the shoulder, stand, walk, handle with fingers, stand, bend, and stoop.
  • Ability to operate a keyboard, view a video display terminal screen, ability to use telephone equipment.
  • Ability to lift up to 20 pounds and push or pull up to 25 pounds.
