Our Learning Technology Solutions (LTS) team fosters the purposeful application of new technologies to enhance teaching and learning. Our team works collaboratively with colleges, departments, faculty, and staff to effectively utilize digital tools and equipment to address instructional goals. The group provides consulting, design, and training for specialized educational technologies, as well as support for active learning spaces and online applications focused on teaching and learning. Our services also include course copying and development, classroom lecture capture, LTI development, learning data consulting, and analytics.

LTS centrally manages educational technologies available to all UIC instructors, teaching assistants, and students. These enterprise-level technologies allow instructors to manage, share, and develop course materials, and facilitate student learning through communication and collaboration

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of AV Design and Development will be responsible for designing visual communication systems and learning technology systems for enterprise projects. This position will work closely with LTS staff, Planning, Sustainability and Project Management (PSPM), and university-contracted vendors to collect metrics, research, test, and recommend innovative solutions that support the design, update, and utilization of academic teaching technologies in our learning environments. This position will be an integral member of the Technical Learning Environments Committee.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Strategic Planning:

  • Collaborates on design solutions for complex or high visibility A/V workflows.
  • Work in conjunction with leadership/staff/vendors on equipment requirements, and plans/cost estimates for installations ranging in complexity.
  • Enhances monitoring capabilities and endpoint management strategies for current and future installed computer-based or A/V equipment.
  • Work with LTS leadership and key stakeholders to create consistency between all learning environments on campus.
  • Participates in budget exercises and processes for annual A/V equipment and facility technology refreshes.
  • Takes an active role in all meetings related to classroom and building renovations, offering leadership and consulting expertise on electrical, network, and AV solutions

Administrative/Operations:

  • Leads system engineering/designer for audio-visual and videoconference presentation systems in complex university network environments.
  • Engineer’s and provides support for end-to-end networks for the deployment of AV, collaboration, and streaming/live initiatives.
  • Troubleshoots issues with all new, revisions, and updates through the launch cycle of new learning environments.
  • Supports the deployment of complex software/hardware solutions to labs and AV systems.
  • Keeps abreast of emerging technologies.
  • When needed, provide consultative support for faculty and staff regarding audio-visual technology solutions for new or emerging requirements.
  • Produce and review operational metrics for all AV deployments and current systems.
  • Maintain repos for drawings, code and other room resources.

Development:

  • Provide direction and training for the LTS support staff and students, when needed.
  • Train staff to deliver routine equipment maintenance and repair, when needed.
  • Develop partnerships, share technical expertise, and consult with other departments, colleges, and universities regarding opportunities to improve and enhance existing classroom technology.
  • Mentor’s colleagues within LTS services
  • Perform other related duties and participate in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • 5-10 years experience in AV Design and development.
  • Proven knowledge of complex classroom systems and active learning environments.
  • Experience with providing high level, large-scale technical assistance and managing technical projects.
  • Strong familiarity with various forms of collaboration tools, including videoconferencing, desktop sharing, and web conferencing.
  • Strong familiarity with video signal format and workflows.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • AVIXA Certified Technology Specialist certification is strongly preferred
