Definition

Information Technology Technicians perform technical and skilled duties that include assisting and training of clients for desktop computer systems and peripherals, network security and connectivity, audio/video equipment and applications used throughout the Sacramento Superior Court. Incumbents typically provide assistance at a help desk call center or onsite with the user. Incumbents will be assigned to one of the following options:

  • Computer
  • Audio/Video


Distinguishing Characteristics
Information Technology Technician (Level I/II) is a single class with two salary levels. The level at which appointments are made and when advancements occur are at the discretion of the appointing authority.

 

Information Technology Technician (Level I) is the entry level in this series. This class is for recruiting applicants and training appointees who do not meet the minimum qualifications for the journey level. Incumbents perform the more routine duties of the class. Under close supervision, incumbents perform a variety of technical/operational duties of less than average difficulty. This level is flexibly staffed with Information Technology Technician (Level II), and incumbents may advance to the higher level after demonstrated proficiency.

 

Information Technology Technician (Level II) is the journey level in this class series. Incumbents are technically proficient in executing their assigned duties. They have the ability to apply specific knowledge to the resolution of specific problems in their assigned duties.

 

Examples of Duties:

Duties may include, but are not limited to the following:

1. Assists with resolving hardware and application problems for computer systems and network resources supported by the Sacramento Superior Court.

 

2. Assists with monitoring computer systems, servers, networks and applications for response time, problem prevention, performance and resource utilization.

 

3. Assists with coordinating the resolution of infrastructure hardware, software and application problems among vendors, technical support and customer personnel.

 

4. Assists with researching computer hardware and software available to users.

 

5. Assists users in applying computer training knowledge to the user’s work environment.

 

6. Assists with reviewing problems and designing technical solutions specific to user needs.

 

7. Facilitates communication regarding outages, maintenance windows and upcoming Information Technology upgrades with various stakeholders including Court staff, business partners and vendors.

 

8. Provides professional audio/video support for courtrooms, judicial officers, executives, managers and staff that rely on audio video technology.

 

9. Meets with service requestors to evaluate audio/video needs, provides audio/video related guidance, best practices and available options.

 

10. Participates in site inspections to determine event and audio/video related design.

 

11. Inspects, organizes, loads and transports audio/video equipment.

 

12. Provides on-site support within Sacramento-based conference centers, offices or other venues.

 

13. Provides general audio/video support to on-site meetings requiring faculty support and set-up of conference phones, computers, liquid-crystal display (LCD) projectors, screens, microphones, speakers, etc.

 

14. Works with courtroom staff, public, and attorneys to help test and facilitate their presentations.

 

15. Provides audio/visual technical support for remotely delivered programs.

 

16. Familiarizes self with videoconference platforms such as Zoom for Government, BlueJeans, Microsoft (MS) Teams, etc. and provides technical support for remote/hybrid meetings.

 

17. Assists with oversight of court owned audio/video equipment: e.g., organization, inventorying, storage, labeling, and decommissioning process, etc.

 

18. Sets up lights, equipment and environment for recording seminars.

 

19. Acts as lead of other lower level on site Audio/Video technicians as assigned.

 

20. Attends and participates in deployment specific pre-planning meetings.

 

21. Performs related duties as assigned.

The duties for the Information Technology Technician (Level I) are the same as the Information Technology Technician (Level II) except that work is typically performed under close supervision. As experience is gained, greater independence of action is exercised and less detailed supervision is received until the incumbent is functioning at the journey level.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Information Technology Technician (Level I)

Either I

Education: An Associate of Arts degree in computer science or completion of a certificate program that is equivalent to the major course work for an Associate of Arts degree in computer science.

Or II

Experience: Two (2) years of experience in data processing performing operations work for a medium to large scale computer system, or client/server or in video support performing operations work for a medium to large scale video deployment.

 

Information Technology Technician (Level II)

Either I

Experience: One (1) year experience in the class of Information Technology Technician (Level I).

 

Or II

Experience: Two (2) years of experience performing enterprise and/or client/server work for a medium to large scale computer system under advanced operating systems, that included at least one (1) year of responsibility for operating the enterprise, client/server or network and related peripheral equipment; or in video support performing operations work for a medium to large scale video deployment that included one (1) year of responsibility designing video deployments, creating equipment specifications and configuring installations.

Substitution: An Associate of Arts degree in computer science or completion of a certificate program that is equivalent to the major course work for an Associate of Arts degree in computer science may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Knowledge of:

Computer Option

Microsoft desktop operating systems, Microsoft Office Suite programs, virtual desktop technologies and other common enterprise applications used by the Sacramento Superior Court customers; LAN/WAN network concepts and procedures; principles and practices of effective communication.

Audio/Video Option

Hardware: Equipment such as mixers, microphones, speakers, control systems, projectors, video monitors, video conferencing equipment, web cameras, audio/video cabling, lighting and audio interfaces. Software: All major software-based video conferencing solutions, especially Zoom; setup, support and tear down of audio-visual equipment for special meetings/events utilizing the equipment and software mentioned prior. Any additional audio/video equipment used by the Sacramento Superior Court and customers; principles and practices of effective communication.

Communicate clearly and tactfully on the telephone and in person; diagnose and resolve customer problems; utilize system utilities and other helpdesk tools; work effectively with users, judicial officers and management; maintain strong interpersonal and communication skills to work effectively with judicial officers, management and Court staff; prioritize and take direction in a fast-pace environment; satisfy continuing education requirements; communicate both orally and in writing; promote and maintain a team environment; prepare and present written and oral reports.

 

Other Information:

Typical Physical Requirements

This position requires the ability to sit, type or read at a computer for up to four (4) hours. Stand, walk, reach and crawl (under furniture to install equipment) for periods of up to four (4) hours. Push/pull a hand cart with up to an eighty (80) pound load. Incumbent must be able to lift, move or set up personal computer equipment, printers, or related equipment which may weigh up to fifty (50) pounds.


Typical Working Conditions

The incumbent will perform the majority of their duties within an air conditioned/heated environment. Duties and functions require working in confined spaces to move and install computer equipment. Occasionally, the incumbent may work in a loading dock area, in closets where network equipment is housed and outside of building where a controlled environment may not be available. Incumbents in this class may be required to work irregular hours and on-call.


Other Requirements

Must be able to pass a criminal history information background check.

Possession of a valid California driver’s license as the successful incumbent will be expected to travel to other court facilities within Sacramento County.
