Job Title: Summer Camp Nurse
Classification: Nonexempt- hourly, Seasonal, Temporary
Primary Function: Responsible for camper, visitor, volunteer and staff care
Reports to: Camp Manager/Summer Camp Director
Dates and Hours:
July 8- August 30, 2024
Seasonal, M-F (10 AM to 4 PM), 30 hours per week
Spend your summer at GCV&M Summer Camp located just 25 minutes south of Rochester, NY.
Preference is given to applicants who can work all summer
Compensation:
$23.00 - $25.000 per hour
Includes one-year Family Membership to the museum and employee discounts on tickets, classes and in museum shops
Position Purpose:
The nurse is responsible for the health and wellness of campers, visitors, volunteers and staff, including: first aid, emergency care, medication dispensing, health communication with parents/doctors, and record management
General Responsibilities:
- Function as health advisor and manager for the camp
- Manage health and cleanliness standards
- Function as key player of camp management team, working closely with Camp Manager and staff
- Maintain all medical records for campers
- Distribute camper medications
- Administer first aid to campers, visitors, volunteers and staff
- Maintain first aid room
- Fill out and submit accident reports
Essential Job Functions:
- Be an active member of the key staff for the summer camp
- Ensure each camper has on file a health history form and immunizations are up-to-date
- Conduct inventory of supplies and notify Director of supply needs or shortages
- Participate in and/or lead specific areas of staff training pertaining to camp health and safety
- Meet with Camp Director prior to opening of camp to review policies and procedures
- Monitor infection control techniques for the duration of camp
- Interact with parents and campers each Monday to review/update health history forms, accept campers medications, become aware of special problems/issues that may impact campers’ abilities to participate in camp activities
- Post hours and keep track of campers needs for daily medications
- Distribute medications to campers and staff as prescribed by doctors
- Monitor the general health of all staff and campers
- Establish and maintain appropriate medical routines including daily medical log, disposal of medical waste, managing and safeguarding medications.
- Fill out and hand in accident/incident reports
- Prepare evaluation of camp season, including inventory and recommendations for next session
- Maintain cleanliness of First Aid room
- Identify any observable evidence of illness, communicable diseases, and lice
- Ensure camp staff and campers know their role related to health care and first aid
- Assume other duties as assigned by Camp Manager/Director
Other Job Duties:
- Contribute to verbal and written evaluations and communication
- Assisting in lunch monitoring
- Assisting in road crossing and creek
- Participate in Summer Camp Staff orientation
Equipment Used:
- Nurses may be asked to use golf carts to transport campers. Some, in rare cases, may be asked to drive museum vehicles
Qualifications:
- Registered nurse (RN), LPN, or other professional with a license as required by NY state law
- Fully insured
- Current First Aid/CPR certification and experience in first aid and emergency management
- Experience working with children and adults
- Experience in maintaining records and required documentation
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Nurses should be friendly, compassionate, team-oriented, hard-working and detail oriented
- Must possess a driver’s license
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Understand the health needs of youth.
- Ability to relate to youth and adults in a positive manner
- Ability to communicate with parents
- Physical ability to get to remote locations on camp property quickly
- Ability to observe and assess unsanitary or unhealthy conditions of camp
- Ability to keep neat and orderly records
- Abilities to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Ability to read and follow directions on medication labels, health forms, physician orders, and parent letters
- Observe and assess sanitation and safety conditions of the camp.
- Ability to communicate with parents, staff, and administration about camper health concerns
Physical Aspects of the Job:
- Ability to lift/assist campers and staff
- Ability to quickly get to remote locations on camp property over uneven terrain
- Possess endurance to meet emergency needs
- Ability to drive to off-camp health provider, physician, or emergency treatment locations
