Cardiac Cath / Special Procedures Tech

MAIN FUNCTION: Keeps patients safe & calm while assisting physicians in cardiac cath/special procedures and vascular surgeon in vascular procedures. Functions independently in the lab while using professional judgment in performance of services. Accurately & promptly implements physician's orders. Scrubs, circulates & records all cases done in the lab & helps to recover patients. Acts in compliance with hospital policies/ procedures. Provides care to patients in a calm, efficient manner.

RESPONSIBLE TO: Director, Cardiovascular Services

MUST HAVE REQUIREMENTS: 1 year experience in cardiac/special procedures lab. Maintain a current AHA (American Heart Association) Healthcare Provider BLS card & ACLS certification. Ability to read & operate EKG monitor & recognize abnormal rhythms. Crosstrain in all areas of the cath lab. Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and licensed with the Ohio Department of Health. No written disciplinary action in the last 12 months. Will be part of the on-call schedule for emergent/urgent cases.

PREFERRED ATTRIBUTES: Balloon pump/Impella experience. Resourceful & calm in emergencies. Demonstrates effective clinical communication. Willingness to assist with community education. Computer literate & Meditech experience. RCIS certification.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Maintains equipment & follows radiation safety standards. Takes on-call status. Uses effective barriers when exposed to blood, body fluids &/or airborne pathogens. Responsible for stocking & maintaining inventory. Aids & assists in reporting statistical data to appropriate personnel. * Denotes ADA Essential * Follows Appropriate Service Standards POSITION EXPECTATIONS: * Verifies patient

* Verifies order. * Performs pre-procedure assessment. * Follows conscious sedation policy/procedure. * Assures that all pre-procedure testing has been performed. * Educates patient: Assures that consent has been signed. Answers patient questions. Explains procedure to patient. * Radiation safety: Uses safe radiation practice. Keeps radiation exposure below safe levels. Wears radiation badge.

* Medication Administration: Demonstrates knowledge of medication dosages & actions. Demonstrates awareness of potential adverse reactions & side effects. Observes universal precautions. No medication errors. Maintains accurate medication records & documentation. Disposes of sharps/contaminated articles appropriately. Right patient, right time, right dose, right route & right med Notifies physician of changes in patient condition or other pertinent information. * Diagnostic studies: Performs appropriate patient prep. Demonstrates knowledge in use of supplies, catheters, etc. Demonstrates appropriate monitoring techniques. Identifies potential life threatening arrhythmias/pressure. Demonstrates ability to achieve & maintain hemostasis. Recovers patient in accordance to dept policy/procedure & good clinical practice. Utilizes aseptic technique as appropriate. Maximizes image quality.

* Maintains equipment: Keeps lab & equipment neat & clean. Minimizes operator error. Contacts Biomed as appropriate. Maintains supplies needed. Provides input for equipment & supply purchase

This staff member must be able to demonstrate the knowledge & skill necessary to provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational and safety related criteria, appropriate to the of the patients served in his/her assigned service area. The skills and knowledge needed to provide such care may be gained through education, training, and/or experience. Geriatric 1. Recognizes patients level of development & modifies approach accordingly. 2. Speaks slowly & distinctly when talking to patient. 3. Repeats instructions several times if necessary. 4. Assesses need for additional safety measures ie. side rails, posey-vest. 5. Explains procedure, allows patient to ask questions.
