POSITION OVERVIEW
Mechanical Engineer II designs and develops mechanical parts, components, and equipment and provides engineering, manufacturing, and project support. Position requires the Mechanical Engineer II to perform all aspects of engineering functions such as, 2D drawing, 3D modeling and designing new products using computer-aided design software such as SolidWorks, Pro-E, AutoCAD Inventor for modeling, digital surfacing, drawing creation, and reverse engineering and component selection. The Mechanical Engineer I must have the ability to produce moderately complex engineering drawings/diagrams and assist in troubleshooting the design of company products.

MAIN DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
The Mechanical Engineer II is responsible for:

  • Independently plan and perform engineering and technical work concerning the design, engineering, and drafting of company products.
  • Complete the majority of 2D part drawings, 3D parts modelling and manufacturing part drawings based on existing design layouts.
  • Develop manufacturing part drawings in accordance with applicable industry and engineering standards.
  • Verify product designs utilizing 3D modelling in SolidWorks, PRO-E, or Autodesk Inventor by checking form, fit, and function.
  • Assign part numbers as required for new manufactured parts and purchased items.
  • Organize and maintain production drawing file store using Autodesk Vault or equivalent database.
  • Create and maintain accurate Bill of Materials in company ERP system.
  • Handle engineering changes and engineering related corrective actions and revise part drawings to refine products or correct errors based on input from personnel on the shop floor.
  • Create product illustrated parts diagrams and write product manuals.
  • Provide engineering technical support to the fabrication and machine shop.
  • Revise and refine product design to facilitate manufacture of products based on design criteria to reduce production cost, production time, material waste, ease of fabrication and machining.
  • Research engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting concept or working sketches and drawings.
  • Utilize Metallurgy/Material Properties knowledge of working and machining characteristics for a wide variety of materials such as stainless steels, duplex stainless steels, cast iron, ni-resist, carbon steels and aluminum in the designing of company products.
  • Assist in the design and development of new products from conceptual ideas and design layouts to final product designs.
  • Interface with outside vendors for component selection, manufacturing, and assembly.
  • Familiarity with RFP, RFQ, RFI.
  • Review assigned projects to ascertain test specifications, procedures, objectives, test equipment, nature of technical problems, and possible solutions, such as part redesign, substitution of material or parts, or rearrangement of parts or subassemblies.
  • Assist in new product development.
  • Confers with supervisors, production, quality department or others to resolve quality problems.
  • Continuous improvement effort to enhance the quality of products.
  • Maintains clean and safe operations by adhering to company mandated rules, safety procedures and regulations.

QUALIFICATIONS & ATTRIBUTES

  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, mechanical engineering technology, or equivalent.
  • Minimum 5 years of product design/engineering experience in an engineering environment and demonstrated skills in the design of moderately complex fabricated and machined parts and assemblies.
  • Knowledge of operation, principles, and practices of engineering drafting and computer programs with intermediate skills in SolidWorks, PRO-E, AutoCAD, or AutoCAD Inventor software programs.
  • Proficient computer skills including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Possesses a creative approach for generating new ideas.
  • Knowledge of fabrication methods, welding techniques, machine tools, cutting tools, and machining process.
  • Ability to design fixtures and tooling for machining of precision parts.
  • Possess working knowledge of complex math concepts including algebra, geometry, and trigonometry.
  • Working knowledge in the use of common machine shop measuring devices such as calipers, micrometers, and machining equipment such as lathes, mills, etc.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals and have full understanding of all processes, procedures and safety risk associated with a manufacturing environment.
  • Handles daily problems with positive solutions and interfaces well with co-workers and other departments at all levels with a positive attitude.
  • Knowledge of ISO 9001 or AS9100 Quality Assurance Programs.
  • Knowledge of OSHA requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Working conditions are normal for a Manufacturing environment where exposure to dust, fumes and airborne particles, temperature extremes and elevated noise level.

  • Employees must regularly lift and or move up to 25 pounds and frequently lift and or move more than 50 pounds.
  • While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to stand, stoop, kneel, climb, crouch, talk and hear.
  • Position requires use of computer, telephones, and other office equipment, reading, writing, standing, sitting, walking, repetitive motions, bending, climbing, listening, and hearing ability and visual acuity.
  • Position occasionally requires ability to work in a manufacturing environment and boats from the beginning of production through the sea trails. This includes mobility to work in and around incomplete hull structures.

RELATIONSHIPS

Birdon’s senior management team, including Divisional and Functional Managers, may provide additional direction and duties from time to time.

Clear communication and people skills are necessary as direct contact with Birdon clients, prospective clients, and production team is an important aspect of this position. It is your responsibility to ensure that Birdon’s values and interests are maintained in support of the customer during all internal and external communications.
