Approx. Shift Time: Flexible schedule* Primarily M-F 11:00-7pm
Summary
The NorthStar Foundation was founded to focus on the critical, unmet needs of North Omaha’s young men, beginning in ninth grade through post-graduation, with the goal of helping them make a smooth transition from high school to independent living with competitive employment or post-secondary education. NorthStar is the only single sex, male afterschool program in Greater Omaha.
This position will report to the high school senior manager and at times may assist in overseeing male students (high school and post-graduates) with the responsibility of coordinating and assisting in specific student leadership activities.
Essential Job Functions include the following, and other duties may be assigned:
Establish strong relationships and serve as the primary point of contact for students seeking support or opportunities.
Support students in making a smooth transition from high school experiences to a post-secondary education, military, trade, or permanent employment through planned activities and events, while serving as a liaison with school and/or community partners.
Plan leadership programs and support students as they engage in various opportunities throughout the school year and summer months.
Provide oversight daily for homework study sessions while following NorthStar designed curriculum and daily plans.
Provide table leadership at nightly dinner/programming activities (facilitating discussion questions among youth).
Makes referrals to appropriate agency personnel when specialized services are required.
Adjusts work hours in a reasonable manner to accommodate the needs of students, parents, or school staff schedules*
Performs any other duties and/or tasks that may be assigned on an as needed basis.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Associate degree required; bachelor’s or master’s degree in secondary education preferred.
Ability to work non-traditional program hours including early mornings, nights, weekends, and holidays when needed.
Prior experience working with students in a public school, summer camp, and/or afterschool setting desired.
Demonstrated ability of building strong relationships with high school students and be available to provide support after graduation desired.
Excellent oral and written communication skills coupled with strong organizational skills desired.
Experience with and ability to embrace the application of technology and social media tools for youth academic programs.
Ability to remain calm and objective in all situations involving staff and students.
Successfully work as a team player with staff and volunteers’ members.
Ability to effectively interact with sensitivity and responsiveness to cultural differences present in the organization’s service population, both individually and in groups
Ability to drive 12-15 passenger van or willing to be trained required, prior experience desired.
Attend regularly scheduled professional development trainings and meetings.
Must possess or obtain appropriate CPR/First Aid Certificate within first 6 months of employment.
Ability to pass background screening with acceptable driving record required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
Duties are generally performed in an indoor setting. Must be able to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch, reach and handle objects. Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for several hours daily.
