Job Description

Camp ClapHans and J.D. McCarty is looking for Camp Nurse to join our team\ for the summer. This position is responsible for providing treatment to patients with a variety of medical conditions. They will work with the camp physician to promote good health and care. This position will administer medication, monitor and record patient progress, and educate families and the patient as needed. 

The ideal candidate will be compassion, proficient and love interacting with young people. This position is vital in assisting to create and manage nursing care plans. They will participate in the evaluation of current and future medical needs of the patient. Responsibilities: 

  • Provide exceptional patient care - Maintain nursing standards while supporting patients with all applicable medical needs. Create and provide patient care plans as needed or requested. Communicate with the patient, their family and members of the medical team to achieve the desired goals of the patient-care plan.  
  • Ensure nurse stations are kept clean and stocked with needed supplies and medications.
  • Collect all medications of campers at camp check in, making sure there is enough medication for the length of stay for each camper. Make sure medication in not expired and in original container with clear instructions from a physician.
  • Make sure all medications are locked in the nurse's station at all times.
  • Observe campers and staff for illness, sickness, or other communicable diseases.
  • Administer camper prescription medications as directed. Dispense over-the-counter medications as appropriate.
  • Keeps a daily medical log and documents on all campers.
  • Assess campers and staff who are ill or injured and determine if further medical attention as needed.
  • Demonstrates safety awareness during entire shift to include appropriate lifting techniques, awareness of patient and staff surroundings, using appropriate training techniques i.e., CPR.  Follows agency and department policy guidelines when lifting by using proper body mechanics while performing duties.  Complies with department guidelines for lifting up to 30 pounds and obtains assistance for weights over 30 pounds.  Follows infection control policy, procedures, and guidelines in reporting infectious illness, utilizing isolation procedures, and in practicing proper universal precautions.  Upon notification of the security staff, implement appropriate evacuation procedures, to include gathering patient charts, medication, directing staff and patients, etc.
  • Observes at all times all areas of camp to ensure optimum levels of health and safety for campers and staff.
  • During camper check out, return all medication back to parents/guardians in their original container.
  • Attend all off-campus field trips to provide nursing care as needed.

Requirements: 

  • Degree in Nursing, with current RN or LPN license for the State of Oklahoma.
  • A minimum of six months of recent medical experience
  • Must be able to stand or sit for long periods of time  
  • Must be able to push, pull, reach, and bend frequently
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds 
  • CPR Certification
  • Background check completion/Passing Drug Test

Summer Camp 2024 will have six sessions consisting in 4 days/week increments. The sessions are as follows:

May 28th-May 30th: Staff Training

June 2nd-June 5th: Session 1

June 9th-June 12th: Session 2

June 16th-June 19th: Session 3

June 23rd-June 26th: Session 4

July 7th-July 10th: Session 5

July 14th-July 17th: Session 6

Day Nurse schedule will be Sunday 1-7pm, Monday & Tuesday 7am-7pm, and Wednesday 7am-5pm

Camp ClapHans is a residential summer camp for kids with disabilities ages 8 to 18 and is an outreach program of the McCarty Center.  The camp is located on the center's campus and features two cabins and an activity building that are located next to an 11-acre lake.  There are six camp sessions offered each summer with activities for campers that include archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, horseback riding, talent shows and swimming.

Our summer staff members consist of Camp Counselors, Camp Leaders, a variety of therapist participation, and Camp Nurses.  Each camper is assigned to a counselor with the camper/counselor ratio of 1:1. Prior to the camp sessions beginning, training will be provided to the staff.  We are fortunate to have Camp Staff whose personal and educational interests are in the allied health-care fields (physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech-language pathology); special and general education; outdoor recreation; nutrition; and other related fields.
