Global Diving & Salvage, Inc. is currently seeking a Salvage Crewman for our Sacramento, CA office.

Position Description

As a Marine Salvage Crewman, you will play a crucial role in the success of each unique marine salvage project, contributing your practical and hands-on skills to address varying complexities and employ diverse tactics for resolution. Your responsibilities will encompass a wide range of tasks. Your versatility, expertise, and commitment to safety will contribute significantly to the overall success of marine salvage projects, making you an integral part of our dynamic team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Works at the direction of a Salvage Master or Salvage Superintendent.
  • Successfully complete intricate marine salvage projects, employing analytical problem-solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Applies practical expertise in rigging design and calculations, showcasing hands-on proficiency in rigging assembly.
  • Utilizes theoretical knowledge of pumping systems and demonstrates practical skills in setting up and operating them.
  • Exhibits a solid understanding of salvage concepts and apply practical know-how in oil spill cleanup equipment and deployment strategies.
  • Demonstrates robust mechanical skills, including troubleshooting and minor repairs.
  • Showcases hands-on skills in hydraulic system assembly and operation.
  • Utilizes electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic power tools as required by the project.
  • Safely operate vehicles, trucks, and trailers, while maintaining effective communication with all levels of management, clients, and government officials.
  • Fabricates custom steel structures and components.
  • Crafts custom rough carpentry to meet project requirements.
  • Assembles heavy lift rigging for efficient and safe operations.
  • Works near cranes, providing hand signals and radio signals to operators.
  • Operates pneumatic manifolds to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Navigates work boats in foul weather and adverse tidal conditions.
  • Acts as External Human Cargo and performs short hauling during helicopter operations.
  • Prepares vessels for dead-ship tows with precision and attention to detail.
  • Sets up, primes, and operates electric-submersible, hydraulic, and gas/diesel-powered dewatering pumps.
  • Sets up, grounds, bonds, and operates liquid petroleum transfer pumps.
  • Deploys and operates oil containment boom and skimmers for effective spill response.
  • Proficiently operating demolition tools, chainsaws, gas-axes, oxy-acetylene torches, kryo-tanks, and similar equipment.
  • Conducts casualty assessments and taking draft readings for accurate project planning.
  • Calculates local tides and currents based on tide stations.
  • Reads and interprets marine weather forecasts to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Conducts Job Hazard Analyses to mitigate risks and ensure a safe working environment.
  • Dons appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for every task and enforcing PPE utilization on job sites.
  • Prepares detailed written reports to document project progress and outcomes.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications / Experience

  • Familiarity with computers and MS Office Suite
  • Valid Driver’s License with acceptable driving record
  • Valid Passport
  • Knowledgeable in ship's structural components and fluent in maritime terminology; adept small vessel/work boat operator.
  • Competent in helicopter safety and operations.
  • Theoretical understanding of hydraulic systems.
  • Experienced forklift operator.
  • Proficient in torch-cutting operations.
  • Familiarity with reading weather forecasts and tide/current tables.
  • Fundamental knowledge of commercial diving operations.
  • Proficiency in both written and oral communication.
  • Previous experience as a Salvage Crewman (preferred).
  • Previous experience in Deck or Engineer positions aboard ocean tug/barge or deep-draft vessels (preferred).

Education / Certifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) card.
  • Maritime Academy graduate with deck or engineering degree (preferred).
  • Merchant Mariner Credential (preferred).
  • 40-hour HAZWOPER (preferred).
  • Certified Welder (preferred).
  • Commercial Driver’s License (preferred).

Physical / Mental Requirements

  • Flexibility to work any day of the week, both night and day.
  • Availability for after-hours emergency response.
  • Willingness to travel to project sites and work approximately 30-60 days at a time.
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test and participate in a random drug and alcohol testing program.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background check.
  • Physical ability to lift, push, and pull up to 70lbs occasionally up to 12 times per shift.
  • Endurance for standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, squatting, crouching, bending, stooping, crawling, kneeling, climbing stairs and ladders, repetitive reaching, and repetitive hand use for up to 12 hours per day in all weather conditions (Sun, Rain, Sleet, and Snow).

Schedule

  • Schedule: Variable
  • Travel up to 50%, both domestic and international.

Compensation and Benefits

  • The pay for field, billable work ranges from $35 - $45/hour and the pay for work that is not in the field and not billable ranges from $20 - $23/hour.
  • Actual base compensation offered will be determined based on multiple factors, including relevant skills and experience.
