Position Summary

The Assistant Principal is responsible for assisting the school principal and Manager of Operations in the leadership, coordination, supervision and management of the school program and operation.


Essential Functions

  • Hours worked: those needed to conduct school business
  • Establish a professional rapport with students, staff, and families
  • Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships with administration, parents, and partnering agencies
  • Attend all Exploration events, faculty meetings, and professional development days
  • Collaboratively develop the school’s Mult Tiered System of Supports framework and coordinate universal, secondary, and tertiary supports for students
  • Facilitate Whole Child Support Team meetings
  • Ensure that students in need of additional supports are identified
  • Provide support to teachers and Whole Child Support Team members in upholding the MTSS framework
  • Address and follow-up on parent concerns and complaints
  • Discipline of students in accordance with DASA and parental follow-up
  • Meet with parents regarding student discipline and behavior issues
  • Conduct student mediations and conflict resolutions as needed
  • Investigate and address all student conduct reports from First Student
  • Notify appropriate personnel and agencies, and establish procedures when there is evidence of substance abuse, child abuse, child neglect or severe medical or social conditions, potential suicide, or individuals appearing to be under the influence of alcohol, controlled substances, or drugs
  • Display the highest ethical and professional behavior and standards when working with student, parents, school personnel and agencies working with the school
  • Ensure a safe, orderly environment that encourages students to take responsibilities for their behavior and creates high moral among staff and students
  • Organize and implement Positive Behavior Intervention and Support programming (assemblies, activities, events, etc.)
  • Work with community partners to bring in outside programming, motivational speakers, authors, etc.
  • Develop and oversee implementation of Master Schedule including lunch and bathroom schedules and appropriate coverages for lunch duty
  • Assists in hiring/orientation, evaluation, management, and coaching for all staff
  • Collaborates with the Operations Manager on the development and implementation, and supervision of all school-wide routines and procedures, i.e. arrival, dismissal, busy duty assignments, hallway and classroom transition routines, classroom expectations and routines, breakfast and snack procedures
  • Provide support to Principal on long- or short-term projects which may include research, tracking trends, preparing document, presentations or summaries of partnership outcomes, coordinating logistical arrangements related to partnerships and ensuring appropriate and effective communication with participants as needed
  • Ensure school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable
  • Stay current on best practices that promote restorative practices; current innovated designs for behavior supports for all tiers to increase academic success
  • Support the Principal in the overall safety of the school
  • Provide administrative support at critical times of day such as breakfast, lunch and dismissal
  • Support Principal in maintaining systems of communication with all stakeholder groups
  • Collaborate with others school leaders to build partnerships across schools that support social-emotional development and programming
  • Maintain systems of communication with WCST and classroom teachers with behavior needs/concerns
  • Assist Principal with SLT in the strategic planning process
  • Support Principal with Development of all schoolwide policies/procedures/systems
  • Participate in the development and evaluation of behavior support programs that increase academic achievement
  • Engage in professional development and support the Principal in providing Professional Development for all staff on schoolwide behavior systems and curriculum implementation using best practices
  • Monitor ALL schoolwide systems for behavior management and SEL support
  • Ensure that students are adequately supervised during non-instructional periods
  • With support from the Principal as needed, implement, maintain, and monitor the SEL programming and supports of the school
  • Conduct parent and student meetings as needed and attend all after school activities
  • Support the recruitment and hiring process
  • Organize staff and student celebrations
  • In collaboration with leadership, develop 3-year Strategic Plan
  • Deal sensitively and fairly with persons of diverse cultural backgrounds and disabilities


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor’s degree in education or a related field
  2. Extensive experience working in an educational setting
  3. Able to work flexible hours to accommodate parent/guardian meetings, school activities, and other mandated events/meetings.
  4. 3-years’ experience in a similar role or setting (e.g. with high need urban students).
  5. Strong organization, communication, and collaborative skills.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Master’s Degree in education, school administration, social services, or similar preferred
  2. Experience working in an urban school setting is preferred
