Job Description

Fully Remote | North America only

1. You must be a strong leader
Leadership is about what you do when times are difficult, and this is such a moment for our company. We need someone who is passionate about our mission - Make Transit Work, ambitious in taking on a difficult task, sober in their assessment of technical stack, and has a great deal of energy, assertiveness and professionalism. You must be preapred to be direct yet kind, assertive yet empathetic. Expectations will be high, you will report to the founders, and you will need to draw on your network to add to our team. This is asking a lot, but in return we offer a career-making opportunity for you.

2. You don't need to be a proven "CTO" - in fact we prefer you are not.
Experience has shown us that our finest executives and leaders were people with rising potential that were taking up a higher role for the first time. Our ideal candidate for this position has been a senior team lead / VP engineering for a smaller company <75 people total, with less than 10 on their engineering team. We want you to be hungry, ambitious and wanting to move up, and we prefer a candidate with a smaller company mindset (read: you have lots of authority and less guard rails, but expectations for your ability to manage uncertainty and institute lightweight process are high). Once you take up the CTO title here and get us headed in the right direction, you will be substantially more marketable for upmarket CTO positions at larger firms. You should see this as a proving ground--when you are finished with this assignment you will have made a real mark on the company. We are going to be more flexible with an uncoventional resume, and rely most heavily on our intuition, your results from our tests, and the opinions of your colleages who we will call. So please apply if you think you have what it takes - we clearly aren't the usual hiring team.

3. Tech matters, but people matter more.
We need someone who is empathetic, diplomatic, candid, direct, kind yet accountable. Listening skills are a must, personal relationships and 1-1's are vital. Our team won't tolerate anything less in their leader--more than any other quality you must have this. An even-ness of temperament and a professionalism of work ethic are the key ingredients. We'll expect you to provide peer references to help us evaluate this, and this is our #1 criteria.

4. You must be able to code (.NET) and get your hands dirty when needed
Our stack is .NET/C# primarily, so that should be most of your experience. We also have React, Angular, Kafka, RabbitMQ, Akka.net, Go, Kubernetes & Docker mixed in. We have a full CI setup and run our own hardware in a colo. Much of our technical work is about integrating third party on-bus hardware and systems at the low level, so you should be comfortable/ambitious to learn with telematics, cabling, signage and the guts of a transit bus. Your experience in these is helpful but not required. That said, you must be able to write, test, document, integrate and deploy C# code at a senior level - we won't expect you to write code every day, but if you can't, you won't be able to manage and hold our team to its highest level of performance. We will test this (and pay you for the time) but we expect you to demonstrate this ability to us. It's crucial - we cannot have a CTO who just manages. You must be a senior engineer and prove it.

5. We need you for the long term.
We know. It's a frothy market out there. Recruiters are calling all the time. But if you take on this assignment, we need your word that you'll see it thru - 3 years+. We can't offer stock (not available from parent company), but we can offer cash comp, great benefits, and a career-making move for you. Our team is passionate, our product makes a difference, and your leadership is needed. Let us sell you on that.

Company Description
Our company was founded in 2006 specializing in all things technical for bus-based public transit authorities in the US. This means we design, manufacture and manage at least 10 different technical systems inside a transit bus, including network, dispatch communications, headsigns, passenger counters, announcers and GPS tracking. It also means we build real-time information systems for riders ("Bus in 7, 10 min") including apps and digital signage found at bus stops. We also build the software and hardware needed for dispatch to communicate in real-time with a bus transit fleet.

The company was acquired in 2015 by a European company (GMV) who does what we do there, in addition to a market leading presence in space and defense. We still operate as a largely autonomous subsidiary. The founding team (CEO, CTO) retired in 2019 after a successful earnout, but has recently been asked to return to increase technical reliability and customer confidence. In the engineering department, we need a strong, passionate technical leader at the controls. The team needs to expand rapidly and level up. This is the most crucial hire we have ever made.

The company has approximately 66 people, 7 in software engineering, 3 in QA, 3 in hardware engineering. We are fully remote with offsites twice a year and physical offices in Downtown LA & Houston, TX. You don't need to be in either of these locales, but it would be great if you are.
Why Work Here?
This is career-making level up opportunity for a motivated, ambitious candidate who believes in our mission: to Make Transit Work.

There is a lot of hardware integration associated with this role. We hope this excites you! The company was acquired in 2015 by a European company (GMV) who does what we do there, in addition to a market leading presence in space and defense. We still operate as a largely autonomous subsidiary. The founding team (CEO, former CTO) retired in 2019 after a successful earnout, but returned last year to help our team level up. Our CTO was recently hired by the founders; he is outstanding and shares our vision. The company has approximately 45 people.
