Overview

The Military Advising Specialist I reports to the Manager, Military Support Center, and is responsible to advise incoming students on Veteran's Affairs (VA) benefits as well as federal, state and institutional funding. The Military Advising Specialist I must deliver a world-class student service experience through quality and timely advising on available funding options, setting expectations, documenting, and collecting appropriate materials in preparation to start school. The Military Support Center delivers student advising via a virtual contact center structure while fostering and nurturing the relationship with our military students.

Works closely with various functional groups, such as Operations Shared Services Veteran Affairs team, Student Services, Military Admissions and Student Finance colleagues to proactively research and resolve any funding questions on military/VA, financial aid and/or alternate resources.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for first-contact resolution through a virtual, contact center structure and appointment service channels; manage a student portfolio, through proactive outreach to collect missing documents and ensuring necessary steps have been fully outlined and completed, and provides fund management counseling. Develops and maintains a thorough understanding of all relevant military educational benefits and programs (GI Bill®, Salute to Service), policies and procedures, including institutional policies and federal (Title IV) and state guidelines, and complies with applicable federal (Title IV) and state laws.
  • Serves as the point of contact for student account issues (e.g., financial aid, VA benefits, payment plans, billing issues, in-school payment collections, alternate funding resources).
  • Delivers world-class customer service through escalation management, timely resolution, and ownership of all funding related questions.
  • The Military Advising Specialist I is responsible for business metrics, including funding milestones, show rates, and compliance.
  • Maintains ongoing business relationships with internal business partners through proactive quality interactions and maintains discretion of student's personal information per FERPA and VA Privacy Act.
  • Other duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Education / Experience
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum 3 years Veterans Affairs and financial aid advising experience is a plus.
  • Experience working in a remote contact center environment a plus.


Skills
  • Experience working with Military/VA, state and/or federal (Title IV) funding progress in a higher education institution.
  • Demonstrated high level of attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Demonstrated effective strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to work independently in a remote setting and can collaborate within a fast-paced, virtual contact center structure.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and interpersonal skills with a people-first/learning approach.
  • Proven ability to set priorities and deadlines and ensure projects are completed.
  • Willing to take ownership of, and quickly resolve, complex issues.
  • Demonstrate flexibility and ability to proactively seek new solutions; seek new opportunities for continual improvement leveraging team performance.
  • Experience successfully presenting and/or facilitating to all types of audiences including all levels of colleagues: front-line management, senior leadership, peers, campus, and home office staff; large groups, small groups, one-on-one settings, remote and local environments is required.
  • Proficiency in basic navigation of Microsoft Office suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Teams).
  • Awareness and foundational knowledge of VA-ONCE software application.
  • Must not have any student loans in default.


Abilities
  • Must be able to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 5 pounds 5% or less of the workday.
  • Must be able stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl 5% or less of the workday.
  • Must be able to talk, see, hear, concentrate, think, learn, and reason for all of the workday.
  • Must be able to sit and walk or otherwise move around for prolonged periods of time throughout the workday.
  • Must be able to use a keyboard and do manual tasks for prolonged periods throughout the workday.


Work Environment
  • Work is performed indoors in a remote environment.
  • Work hours includes hours to cover students across the US (PST to EST) and evening and weekend hours.
  • Occasional travel may be required.
