As a Manufacturing Automation Engineering Manager, you will lead an engineering team focused on manufacturing automation engineering activities supporting medical diagnostic products manufacturing, including

machine design, automation controls and software, robotics, machine vision, SCADA, and smart manufacturing. Your team is accountable for working collaboratively with other teams to ensure requirements are met, documentation meets quality and regulatory standards, and timelines are maintained. You will work closely with leadership and program management to provide automation engineering resource status, and input used to make decisions in IDEXX's continued high growth environment. In addition, you will spearhead and support value engineering projects to increase production efficiency, capacity, reduce cost, improve quality, and improve equipment OEE. What you can expect in this role

  • You will manage the day-to-day automation engineering team, including managing staff, assigning work, providing coaching, monitoring activities, driving results, and evaluating performance.
  • You will leverage your automation engineering skills and experience in leading the design, integration, debug, test, and validation of high-speed medical device automation equipment, including machine design, automation controls & software, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), HMIs, robotics, machine vision, SCADA, etc.
  • You will manage internal/external execution of automation capital projects.
  • You will coordinate with engineering, production, and other areas to ensure that automation is correctly integrated into the overall manufacturing process.
  • You will develop and recommend procedures and methods, including preparing technical reports and documentation.
  • You will exercise analytical skills and tools to draw insights from large amounts of manufacturing data.

What you will need to succeed
  • 7+ years of experience designing and building automation and manufacturing equipment.
  • 3+ years experience in leading and managing automation capital projects.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Manufacturing, or Industrial).
  • Experienced with high-speed manufacturing, automation, and process control equipment.
  • Strong automation machine design and controls background with experience designing automated production equipment and an in-depth understanding of how a manufacturing and automation system functions.
  • Ability to perform analysis with alternate scenarios and make recommended reasonable changes in the proposed machine/automation to optimize machine/process OEE.
  • Fundamental understanding of the various Engineering disciplines; Mechanical Engineering, Controls Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechatronics
  • Core competency in industrial robotics, EOAT design/support, safety systems, PLC/controls, and machine vision systems
  • Expertise in business case development, large capital project management, requirements definition, and equipment design.
  • Experienced with high-speed automation equipment, discrete part handling, product labeling, and verification.
  • Experienced in a leadership position managing people and projects
  • Proven ability to lead and motivate cross-functional teams with both internal and external business partners.
  • Ability to manage tasks and projects through to successful completion and attainment of goals.
  • Successful track record working with cross-functional development teams.
  • Strong analytical and problems solving skills, excellent organizational skills, and the ability to quickly learn new technologies and processes.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as members of cross-functional teams.

  • Experienced with equipment and process validations (FAT/SAT/IQ/OQ/PQ).
  • Strong computer literacy is essential - Microsoft Windows, Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio, Project), Smartsheet, and other engineering software.
  • Ability to evaluate, recommend, and implement process, machine, and design improvements to production equipment and procedures.
  • Highly skilled in solving practical problems and dealing with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited information is available.
  • High work ethic and self-motivated with the drive and tenacity to get the job done.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to perform well both independently and in teams.
  • Ability to communicate ideas effectively and have a proven record of accomplishment.
  • Have flexibility with requirements and system changes.
  • Continuous learner who embraces a growth mindset.
  • Medical Device or Biotech related industry experience working within a GMP, FDA, and ISO environment is a plus.
