#LI-POST Description of Job The Engineering Physical Science Technician I - Materials Tester/Construction Inspector provides support to Engineers in construction testing and inspection. This position ensures that materials incorporated into projects are in compliance with contract plans and specifications and also conducts inspections of construction projects to ensure that contractor's work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications. Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: + Certifies that materials incorporated during construction are in conformance with the contract by conducting and reviewing field and lab tests. + Documents quantity and quality of contractor's materials. + Executes physical tests per Materials Manuals including testing the physical properties of concrete (slump, air content and compressive strength), soils and aggregate properties, compaction testing of embankments and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) and provides test results to Engineers for acceptance. + Conducts laboratory tests of HMA gradations, RICE and AC content. + Collects and inputs data into software to calculate price reductions and incentive payments. + Conducts site visits to inspect contractors' work procedures and certifies that contractor's work is in conformance with construction plans and specifications. + Conducts reviews of contractors' use of personnel, traffic control signs and devices that will be required to safely guide the public and provides this information to the engineer + Regularly reviews materials documentation and inspection reports for accuracy. + Completes training in inspections, traffic control, erosion control and other technical classes required for construction inspections. + Other duties as assigned. Work Environment: + Primarily Monday-Friday 40-hour work week + Travel to project sites to perform materials certifications (up to 4 hours one way); may be required to take samples to the main lab in Denver. Travel to other locations within the state for training. + Required to operate CDOT vehicles + Work in variety of weather conditions near high-speed traffic + Works with variety of hazardous materials Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights The minimum qualifying experience must be specifically documented on your application.

Additional information submitted after the closing date of this announcement will not be considered in the review of your application. + High school diploma or General Education Diploma (GED). + AND four (4) years of experience assisting licensed professional engineers, one year of which must have been assisting licensed professional engineers with construction inspections or materials testing. + A current valid driver's license is required for this position as it requires operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position. Substitution: Satisfactory completion of course work from an accredited, non-correspondence college or university appropriate to the assignment may be substituted on a year-for-year basis for the required general experience. NOTE: If using education to meet any part of the Minimum Qualifications listed above, a legible copy of your unofficial college transcript(s) or credential evaluation report must be submitted with your application. Transcripts from colleges or universities outside of the United States must be assessed for U.S.

equivalency by a NACES educational credential evaluation service. Failure to provide a transcript or credential evaluation report may result in your application being rejected and you will not be able to continue in the selection process for this position. Transcripts must show all course work and degree(s) conferred and must show the name of the school. Special Requirements: This position will be required to obtain the following Certifications within 24 months of hire: + CAPA Level 1 Inspector, + CAPA Level A Laydown, + Level B Plant Materials + Control, ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician Grade I, + ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician, + WAQTC, Radiological Safety & Nuclear Gauge Operation Conditions of Employment + Must pass a pre-employment screening which may include social security number trace, criminal records check, public court records check, educational records, and driving records checks.

More information in the supplemental information section. + A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position. + Effective September 20, 2021, employees will be required to attest to and verify whether or not they are fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Employees who have not been fully vaccinated may be required to submit to serial testing in the future. Upon hire, new employees will have three (3) business days to provide attestation to their status with proof of vaccination.

(1/28/22) Preferred Qualifications The Exceptional Applicant will be an Engineering Assistant or Technician - Construction Inspector or Materials Tester with ability or accomplishment in the following: + Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section; + Highest work/personal ethics and integrity; + Comprehensive knowledge and experience in reading and interpreting engineering project plans; + Comprehensive knowledge and experience in highway project inspections; + Comprehensive knowledge of, and extensive experience performing materials testing; + Strong attention to technical detail and accuracy; + Excellent reasoning, analytical, and problem solving ability; + Strong oral and written communication skills including technical report writing and editing; + Ability to partner with professionals, consultants, and staff, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities; + Effective interpersonal and relationship building skills; + Ability to organize, analyze, and interpret numerical data; + Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment; + Effective planning and organizational skills; + Ability to work under tight deadlines and be adaptable to changing assignments; + Ability to work effectively in both independent and team situations; + A passion for safety; + Fluency in Microsoft Office Suite, Gmail, SAP, and the ability to quickly learn other software systems.
