Six positions are available at this time:
Public Works Streets & Storm: Two positions starting as early as April.
Hours: 7:30 - 4:00 Monday through Friday
Parks and Recreation: Three positions starting as early as April.
Hours: Shift times vary and could include later shifts (i.e., 12:00 - 8:30 PM) and will include weekends (i.e. Saturday through Wednesday). Part time work may be available also.

POSITION PURPOSE:

Individuals assigned to this classification are expected to have the physical, mechanical and manipulative skills and abilities necessary to perform the general manual labor required in the area to which assigned. Individuals usually work with more experienced employees but will be expected to work independently to perform relatively routine and well-known tasks; or more difficult work following specific instruction and directions. The seasonal worker typically works five months or less between April and September.


Essential duties and responsibilities may include, but are not limited to, the following:

When Assigned to Parks and Recreation Crew:

Assist staff in routine grounds maintenance including, but not limited to:

  • Lawn mowing, tree trimming, weeding of flower beds, vegetation management; seeding, and fertilizing lawns.
  • Setting up and moving portable sprinklers.
  • Cleaning and stocking restroom buildings and portable restrooms using cleansers and disinfectants.
  • Perform general site maintenance, cleaning activities, and minor repairs on city buildings, restrooms, structures, park equipment, and facility grounds.
  • Performing litter control.
  • Cleaning walkways and other tasks as required.
  • Assist staff during special events and volunteer projects.
  • Operate standard size pick-up and/or sedans with standard hand and foot controls.
  • Maintain regular, predictable and reliable attendance during scheduled hours.

When Assigned to Streets/Storm Crew:
Assist staff in routine streets/storm maintenance including, but not limited to:

  • Operating a variety of hand tools and power tools and equipment including shovels, picks, blowers, hand-operated compactors, pumps, drills, brooms, and edgers.
  • As directed, control traffic at work sites by setting up warning signs, traffic/pedestrian barricades and, if certified, flagging traffic manually.
  • Clear dirt and other debris from in and around storm sewers, catch basins, ditches, buildings, and other City facilities using appropriate hand and power tools
  • Performing litter control
  • Cleaning walkways and other tasks as required
  • Assist staff during special events and volunteer projects
  • Operate standard size pick-up and/or sedans with standard hand and foot controls

PERIPHERAL DUTIES:

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Be able to work independently and at times with little direction.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The physical demands and work environment characteristics described below and in the attached form are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk; and hear. The employee frequently is required to sit for extended periods of time and type on a keyboard for extended periods of time. The employee is constantly required to stand; walk; reach with hands and arms; frequently required to climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close, distance, color, and peripheral vision; depth perception; and the ability to adjust focus.

Work is primarily performed outdoors, subject to travelling by City vehicle from site to site several times each day. While performing the duties of this job, the incumbent is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; regularly works in outside weather conditions and exposed to changing weather conditions such as rain and sun; and regularly works in and heavy vehicle traffic areas on urban streets; or public areas such as parks, recreation areas, docks, and boating areas. The incumbent is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles and vibration and frequently works near moving mechanical parts. The incumbent is occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud to very loud while operating machinery or working near equipment.

May also be required to work on weekends, evenings, and holidays.

Must be able to operate standard size pick-up and/or sedans with standard hand and foot controls.

Training and Experience Guidelines

Preferred Experience: Experience operating and maintaining small, medium, and large landscaping and/or mowing equipment.

Any combination of education and experience, which provides the applicant with the desired skills, knowledge and ability required to perform the job, may be substituted for these qualifications. Examples of these skills may include:

Ability to:

  • Function, usage, and operating characteristics of a variety of power tools and hand tools used in parks, landscaping and/or maintenance and repair.
  • Participate as a contributing member of a service-oriented team.
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with City staff, other organizations and the general public and be able to deal with the public in a pleasant and responsive manner conducive to positive public relations.
  • Perform a variety of semi-skilled and skilled maintenance, construction and repair work in the area of work assigned.
  • Operate a variety of tools and equipment in a safe, proper, and effective manner.
  • Perform a variety of tasks for extended periods of time including during adverse weather conditions.
  • Perform manual labor.
  • Work safely and adhere to principles and practices of safety in all areas of public works services.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Troubleshoot minor equipment malfunctions.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely.

LICENSE, CERTIFICATE, or OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license and a driving record which meets the city's requirements. Must be able to obtain State of Washington driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • Completion of position-relevant background check.
  • A current Washington State Flaggers Card is preferred. If you do not have one training will be provided by the city while working in the Streets and Storm division.
