Job Description

We are searching for a skilled and collaborative Senior Director of Finance at a Western Mass nonprofit children’s service agency.

The Senior Director of Finance is part of the Senior Leadership team and is responsible for overseeing all of the fiscal and administrative duties of the Business Office department. The Senior Director of Finance is also responsible for the management of the Business Office staff, for maintaining all financial information system functions, meeting all fiscal-related regulations, and for the completion of all fiscal-related auditing processes. The position is exempt, full time, and reports to the CEO.

The essential functions of this position include:

  • Responsible for all fiscal operations of the agency. Ensures established fiscal methods and procedures are followed in accordance with agency, state and federal regulatory guidelines. Responds to and resolves both operational and technical problems or situations. Reviews and approves fiscal transactions and prepares monthly budgets including closings and other adjustment entries. Ensures that general ledger accounts are balanced and reconciled. Prepares and disseminates monthly and annual financial statements. Maintenance and update of computer systems pertaining to accounting functions. This includes: developing and implementing fiscal policies, procedures, and systems in accordance with best practice accounting standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Prepares, plans and presents financial budgets in collaboration with the CEO for finance committee and Board of director meetings.
  • Works collaboratively with the CEO and other Senior Leaders (as applicable) to prepare and administer all budgets, contracts, and amendments; anticipates and analyzes fiscal trends and problems and develops action plans with recommendations; establishes and oversees internal control procedures and keeps all accounting up to date and in compliance with all accounting/audit requirements.
  • Works collaboratively with the CEO and Senior Director of Human Resources to select annual cafeteria plans, oversee and maintain all insurance policies, and maintenance agreements.
  • Takes the lead role in coordinating the process and completion of corporate audit/s; prepares required filings and reports, oversees all banking functions; and maintains all corporate financial agreements; maintains records of certificates, licenses, and other documentation relevant to auditing processes. Also oversees all retirement account functions, payment processes and the 403B audit. Oversees processes and progress related to investment funds. Obtains certificate of good standing, certificate of solicitation, and ensures annual reports are posted in a timely manner.
  • Maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with funding agencies. Works to ensure compliance with appropriate statutes and regulations. Acts as an agency liaison to state, federal, and local agencies, as well as the union representative, on fiscal and administrative matters to ensure compliance and to maintain good standing.
  • Works with the auditor to complete audits, file annual reports, tax-related processes and documentation, certificate of good standing and other annual fiscal documents/processes.
  • Maintains a working and positive liaison with other Agency managers and staff. Participates in various meetings with senior leadership and agency’s managers. Provides input, information and training regarding financial and budgetary matters. Discusses and provides pertinent information pertaining to the implementation of financial policies, procedures, methodsand practices as requested.
  • Oversees the payroll system and reporting functions to ensure accuracy. Oversees the workflow design of financial position functions such as A/R rep, A/P rep, Billing rep, Payroll Specialist, supervision and training all fiscal staff in the finance department. Responsible for the timeliness of all fiscal functions (i.e., billing). Delegates responsibility and authority for some operational functions and supervision of staff to subordinates; oversees for timeliness of completion and accuracy.
  • Hires, trains, assigns and supervises financial/business office staff (fiscal assistant, payroll specialist/HR, accounts payable, receptionist) as to the organization’s policies and procedures, methods and practices, and standards of performance and other matters affecting their work. Establishes goals and objectives and monitors progress, provides guidance and direction as required.
  • Works collaboratively as a liaison to the CEO and Senior Leadership team for fiscal and administrative functions, to help directors oversee program budgets on a monthly basis, address programmatic needs, problems, and regulatory compliance issues related to finance.
  • Performs other duties and attend training sessions and meetings as required.
  • Adheres to the agency’s Rules, Standards, and Ethics Policy.

Minimum Requirements for the Position

  • Masters’ Degree in finance preferred.
  • CPA preferred
  • 5 years of supervisory and fiscal/accounting experience
  • 5 years of G/L and nonprofit finance expertise
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills, supervision skills, computer skills, valid driver’s license
  • Proficient in excel, importing, exporting, reporting, and working knowledge in financial accounting software such as, Blackbaud/Financial Edge
  • Physical Requirements: Visual acuity to computer screen data, manual coordination and dexterity, sit, standing, climbing stairs for multi-level office building, ability to lift up to 25 lbs.

Salary: $90,000 - $115,000 based on experience and strengths
