Corning's Environmental Technologies segment manufactures ceramic substrates and filter products for emissions control in mobile and stationary applications around the world.

Scope of Position:

Focus will be on controls equipment design, build, programming, testing, and debugging of automated process machines and material handling systems within Corning's manufacturing plants and processes, utilizing custom programming standards and Rockwell Automation controllers.

Role within Group:

This role is a member of the cross-functional Controls Engineering team responsible for support and functionality enhancements required for advanced manufacturing automation and process machine systems. Responsibilities also include the design, implementation, maintenance, and validation of safety systems in compliance with ISO 13849 standards.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:

  • Serve as an Electrical Controls resource for the development and troubleshooting of production equipment in the Finishing areas of the Diesel Manufacturing facility in Painted Post, NY.
  • Initiate and maintain relationships with Engineering, Operations, and Maintenance to provide new functionality. Control system programming will include, but is not limited to, safety systems, programmable control systems, human machine interfaces, robots, motion control, measurement systems, instrumentation, dryers, kilns, material handling systems, networks, computer system hardware/software application support for MES, and data collection systems.
  • Work in accordance with plant and division electrical controls standards. Serve as a technical resource for questions regarding deviations and interpretations, as well as managing changes during off-shift activities.
  • Individuals must be capable of executing assignments in a team-based environment with minimal supervision. They must also be capable of communicating effectively with Operations and Leadership concerning the benefits and risks of engineered solutions.

Hours of Work / Work Schedule / Flex-Time:

This position is scheduled for an 8-hour day shift; however, the individual is expected to work the hours required to achieve plant production objectives. Off-shift support is required for emergencies to maintain operations of critical assets.

Required Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a bachelor's degree with prior experience working with control systems.

Required Years and Area of Experience:

  • 3+ years of engineering experience.

Required Skills:

  • High level of technical curiosity that enables unique solutions to the technical challenges of the position. Ability and interest to learn and apply new technologies in support of overall technical objectives.
  • Fundamental understanding of electrical design practices and machine/motion control systems.
  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary, team-based environment.
  • Understanding of general mechanics and the ability to apply it in troubleshooting and system design.
  • Self-starter who can meet expectations for objectives and timelines with minimal supervision.
  • Highly motivated, results-oriented, customer-focused, with a high level of commitment.
  • Sound problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to execute projects and deliver on budget.

Desired Skills:

  • 5+ years of experience in the controls field with demonstrated knowledge of control system design, programming, and system integration.
  • Familiarity with state-of-the-art technologies in control systems integration, controls architectures, PLCs, motion control systems, electromechanical drive systems, robotics, part sensing, vision systems, risk assessment, and safety systems.
  • Knowledge of instrumentation and process control concepts.
  • Experience working on capital improvement projects.
  • Experience with Rockwell Automation programming environments, including PAC/PLC, HMI, motion, and related systems.
  • Fanuc robot experience.
  • Familiarity with control system hardware such as PLCs, servo motion, VFDs, safety devices, and sensors.
  • Prior experience moving a new product or process from development into manufacturing.
  • Knowledge of applicable national and international electrical and robotic design and safety codes such as NFPA 70, NFPA 79, NFPA 70E, NFPA 86, ISO 13849, and ANSI/RIA standards.
  • Ability to communicate engineering solutions effectively to Leadership.
  • Experience with vision systems for part inspection or orientation, such as Cognex or Keyence.
  • Experience with Honeywell Experion DCS.
  • Knowledge of glass and ceramic manufacturing.

The range for this position is  $105,994.00 - $145,743.00  assuming full time status. Starting pay for the successful applicant is dependent on a variety of job-related factors, including but not limited to geographic location, market demands, experience, training, and education.
