What Is a Wellness Director and How to Become One

Wellness Director

What Is a Wellness Director?

A wellness director may perform their job duties in two different areas: corporate wellness or community wellness. In a corporate setting, your job is to promote health and safety to staff members. Your responsibilities include planning and implementing fitness and wellness programs and helping employees get health insurance and other health services. A community health and wellness director has similar duties, but in this role, you work with members of a community instead of employees of a business. In this sector, you may focus more on wellness programs and access to health services.

How to Become a Wellness Director

The qualifications needed to become a wellness director depend on the type of position and the size of the company or community. Employers often seek applicants with a master’s degree in exercise science or health sciences. Degrees in community development, social work, or public health may qualify you for community-focused wellness director positions. Though employers usually prefer a master’s degree, a bachelor’s degree may be sufficient in some cases. This position also requires excellent planning skills and the ability to communicate with employees or community members.
