Description
The Police Cadet is an entry-level, non-sworn position intended for individuals currently enrolled in an Ohio Peace Officer Training Academy (OPOTA)-certified basic training program. The purpose of this position is to prepare recruits for a career as sworn law enforcement officers with the City of Riverside upon successful completion of the academy and obtaining OPOTA certification. Recruits are expected to uphold the values and standards of the City and its Police Department while representing the organization in and outside of the academy setting.
Example of Duties
- Maintain full-time enrollment and satisfactory progress in an OPOTA-certified basic police academy.
- Learn and demonstrate knowledge of applicable local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Follow all academy rules, policies, and procedures, including attendance and physical fitness requirements.
- Exhibit professionalism, integrity, and commitment to public service while representing the City and Police Department.
- Participate in department-sponsored training, orientation sessions, or community outreach activities, as assigned.
- Maintain physical fitness standards required for law enforcement training.
- Successfully complete all required academic, physical, and skills-based components of the basic training curriculum.
- Perform related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Must be currently enrolled in an OPOTA-certified police academy at the time of application or appointment.
- Must be at least 21 years of age by the time of appointment as a sworn officer.
- Must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Must possess a valid Ohio driver's license and maintain a satisfactory driving record.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States and eligible to be certified as a peace officer in Ohio.
- Must pass a background investigation, drug screen, and other pre-employment assessments, as required.
