Summary: This position is responsible for assignment of diagnoses and procedure codes on all outpatient records for the billing process and the statistical database. Responsible for daily review of the unbilled accounts report. Works in conjunction with Corporate Compliance or other hospital departments to assure all coding is based on complete and accurate documentation that is reflective of the patient's medical condition and severity.
Education / Experience:High School diploma or equivalent required. Completion of American Health Information Management approved Accredited Record Technician course and/or completion of college level courses in anatomy and physiology and related science courses, preferred. Minimum 2 years coding experience in an acute care setting preferred.
License / Certification: CCA, CPC, COC, or RHIT required within 1 year of employment in the position.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
• Demonstrates knowledge of ICD-CM and CPT coding principles and guidelines.
• Knowledge of federal, state and payer specific regulations and compliance standards relating to documentation, coding and billing.
• Must be a team player and possess strong interpersonal skills demonstrating professionalism, tact and diplomacy when working with peers and other departments.
• Individual must be self-confident and able to function independently in a high-stress environment subject to frequent interruptions.
• Individual must be able to effectively manage time and schedules.
• Requires ability to effectively identify and resolve problems.
• Skill in the use of computers, preferably in a PC, Windows-based operating environment.
• Critical thinking skills.
Working Conditions/Physical Requirements:
Position requires sitting for 90% of the workday and mobility 10% of the workday.
There is occasional stooping, bending, kneeling, and crouching.
There is frequent reaching, use of hands and repetitive action.
Requires occasional lifting or carrying up to 25 pounds, pushing/pulling up to 50 pounds.
There is a continuous need for speaking with clear diction and hearing sensitivity in conversation either by phone or in person.
Continuous visual acuity at close and distant range.
Inside protected from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Minimal noise levels.
Much exposure to computer work.
Occasional exposure to risk of electrical shock.
Some exposure to infectious disease while performing job-related tasks.
Some exposure to hazardous chemicals. Occasional exposure to radiation.
