SUMMARYThe APA!/TPA! Government Affairs and Policy Internship is a comprehensive internship with an emphasis on affecting policy and legislative changes to further our mission. The intern will have impact at the local, state, and national level through hands-on experience. This internship will provide real life experience and training to students for our brands Austin Pets Alive!, Texas Pets Alive!, American Pets Alive! and Human Animal Support Services. The intern will also expand capacity for the policy team by providing additional support.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Assisting with forward facing communications
- Supporting in-person and virtual event productions
- Compiling one pagers/fact sheets
- Data management and collection
- Managing and curating content for the TPA! social media channels
- Creating content for newsletters
- Attend regular volunteer policy team meetings
Majority of work will take place in a remote setting but position may involve event attendance when safe/appropriate.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS- High school diploma/GED
- Ability to provide at a minimum 8 hours per week; Ideally M-F
- Detail oriented
- Communicative
- Innovative
- Dedicated
- Interested in animal welfare and/or social work
- Comfortable working around and with animals
- Knowledge using Canva and Google Products, or a willingness to learn
- Passionate about improving animal welfare, lifesaving and keeping pets with their people

- Commitment to APA!'s customer experience expectations
- Willing and committed to working well with volunteers and staff in all roles
- Follow instructions and training given by the Volunteer Team.
The intern will be managed by the department coordinator and overseen by the director. Intern will work with the coordinator, volunteers, and independently on various projects aimed to advance animal welfare at the local, state, and national level.
TIME COMMITMENTApproximately 8-10 hours per week
This is a part-time position of 8+ hours weekly for a minimum of 6 months
LOCATION(S)- Offsite/Remote Position (telecommuting)
- May travel to other locations as needed
An internship with APA!/TPA!/AmPA!/HASS will provide:
- Knowledge of inner workings of a fast-paced, mission-driven organization
- Development of personal management skills
- Insight into various opportunities within a Government Affairs and Policy team, including data management and collection, bill tracking, social media management, engagement with elected officials, and events
- Hands-on experience in creating collateral policy materials such as one-pagers, infographics, social media content, etc.
- Education on animal sheltering and the animal welfare industry
This is an unpaid, volunteer internship. This internship provides educational benefit to the chosen candidate who may utilize the skills and knowledge gained during his/her time as a volunteer intern to advance their career and/or knowledge of the non-profit and marketing industry. If applicable, this opportunity may count towards university requirements, and we will work to help meet these requirements. The chosen candidate will not be eligible for benefits and will not be covered under workers’ compensation. Volunteer intern will not be guaranteed a paid position at this organization after the completion of the internship and understands that they are not entitled to wages for time spent in the internship. This internship is a valuable experience to be listed on a resume and interns with strong performance will be provided multiple references for future job hunts.
