Job description

Akima is looking for a Tax Manager to work in Herndon, VA on a hybrid basis. To join our team of outstanding professionals, apply today!
Responsibilities
  • Sales and Use Tax:
    • Lead and oversee the preparation, review, and filing of monthly, quarterly, and annual sales and use tax returns across multiple states and jurisdictions.
    • Prepare and analysis of large datasets to identify sales and use tax liabilities, ensuring accuracy and compliance.
    • Monitor evolving state and local tax regulations and communicate implications to leadership.
    • Conduct complex tax research, develop strategies, and provide recommendations to minimize tax risks related to sales and use tax.
    • Assist with international sales tax/VAT compliance and research to ensure proper tax treatment for international transactions.
  • Business Licenses:
    • Manage compliance with business license requirements across multiple jurisdictions, including overseeing, preparation and submission of applications and renewals.
    • Establish processes for Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL) and other Business licenses to track renewal deadlines and ensure timely submissions.
    • Demonstrate strong knowledge of business license rules and requirements, including the ability to assess when a business license is required and when it may not be necessary. Provide guidance to management and operations teams to ensure compliance while avoiding unnecessary registrations.
    • Research international tax matters such as permanent establishment (PE), VAT, and corporate tax obligations in foreign jurisdictions.
  • Property Taxes:
    • Manage the property tax compliance process, including calculating, preparing, and filing returns across multiple jurisdictions.
    • Review property tax assessments and coordinate with local authorities to ensure proper valuation and assessments.
    • Ensure timely payment of property tax bills.
  • Income Tax Focus:
    • Gather, analyze, and provide accurate financial data to support preparation and filing of federal, state, and local income tax returns by the corporate tax team.
    • Compile and validate information required for franchise tax filings and state apportionment calculations.
    • Coordinate with the income tax department to ensure timely delivery of trial balances, adjustments, and supporting schedules.
    • Maintain detailed documentation of tax data provided, ensuring accuracy and compliance with internal controls.
    • Respond to information requests from the income tax and audit teams as needed.
    • Monitor updates to tax laws and regulations that could impact data reporting or apportionment methodologies.
    • Support internal process improvements to streamline tax data collection and reporting.
  • Data Analysis & Process Improvement:
    • Handle large volumes of data for sales Tax, Business, Professional and Occupational License (BPOL), property taxes, apportionments using data analysis tools like Excel, Power BI, or any other tools to make the process smooth and efficient.
    • Perform data reconciliation and detailed data mining to identify discrepancies and ensure compliance with tax requirements.
    • Drive process improvement initiatives, leveraging automation and technology to streamline compliance.

  • Audit and Support:
    • Lead responses to tax audits, ensuring timely and accurate submission of supporting documentation.
    • Serve as a key liaison with internal stakeholders, providing guidance on the tax implications of business operations and transactions.
    • Support the Tax Director in tax projects and initiatives, such as system implementations and tax process improvements.
  • Compliance and Reporting:
    • Ensure overall compliance with state, local, and international tax regulations.
    • Oversee the preparation and review of monthly tax provisions and reconciliations, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
    • Provide regular reporting and updates to the management on compliance status, risks, and opportunities.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA or equivalent certification strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of progressive tax experience, including supervisory or management experience.
  • Strong expertise in sales and use tax, business licenses, and property tax; international tax exposure preferred.
  • Experience with income tax compliance and provisions is a plus.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel (pivot tables, vlookups, large datasets) and familiarity with tools like Cost Point, Avalara, or similar systems.
  • Strong leadership, analytical, and problem-solving skills with the ability to develop solutions to complex tax issues.
  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively across departments and with external authorities.
  • This Hybrid position requires that you live within commuting distance from Herndon, VA
