Director of Social Work

Job Summary

As the Director of Social Work, you will supervise the Social Work staff, providing social, emotional, and related difficulties associated with our residents' medical conditions and adjustment to nursing home placement. You will be responsible for overseeing and directing all activities and staff within the Social Work Department, working closely with the Administrator to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.

Responsibilities
  • Responsible for a caseload of residents, maintaining the highest practicable physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being of each resident
  • Supervise the provision of social work services to residents, assisting in their adjustment to their illnesses, disabilities, and placement
  • Counsel residents and families regarding adjustment to the nursing home and related problems
  • Provide in-service training to staff when indicated
  • Schedule, supervise, and evaluate the work of the Social Work and clerical staff in the department
  • Recommend and initiate policies and procedures following approval of the Administrator
  • Develop and ensure adherence to policies regarding the rights and responsibilities of residents
  • Coordinate and supervise Social Work staff involvement in interdisciplinary conferences to review care plans and ensure a concise care plan is in effect
  • Participate in interdisciplinary team morning meetings, department head meetings, care planning, and any other meetings that require social work input
  • Conduct weekly Social Work staff meetings, at least quarterly family council meetings, and any other group activities implemented by the Social Work staff
  • Other duties as assigned
Performance Knowledge, Skills, and Characteristics
  • Thorough knowledge of social case work practices and procedures, as well as social factors related to disease and disability
  • Good working knowledge of case recording techniques and modern principles and practices of social case work
  • Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and NYS Health Department regulations and community services
  • Skilled in interviewing techniques
  • Ability to establish and maintain successful relationships with other departments and handle sensitive situations with residents, families, staff, and the public
  • Ability to organize work effectively, communicate clearly, and prepare accurate records and reports
  • Sensitivity to the reactions of others and good powers of observation, analysis, and tact
Requirements
  • LMSW, MSW, BSW, or a bachelor's degree in a human service field
