What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Wine Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Wine Intern, you need a basic understanding of viticulture and enology, a willingness to perform physical labor, and, often, a relevant degree or coursework in wine or agriculture. Familiarity with winery equipment, laboratory analysis tools, and production management systems is typically required. Strong teamwork, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this hands-on role. These competencies ensure efficient operations, high-quality wine production, and valuable learning experiences in a dynamic winery environment.

What is the difference between Wine Intern vs Wine Assistant?

AspectWine InternWine Assistant
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in viticulture, enology, or related fieldMay have similar education, but often with more practical experience
Work EnvironmentInternship setting, learning-focused, often seasonal or temporarySupportive role within winery or wine retail, more consistent
Employer & Industry UsageUsed in wineries, vineyards, wine festivals, and educational programsCommon in wineries, wine shops, and distribution companies

While both roles involve working in the wine industry, a Wine Intern is typically a student or recent graduate gaining hands-on experience, whereas a Wine Assistant is a more experienced support role within wineries or retail settings. The internship is often temporary and educational, while the assistant role may be ongoing and more operational.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a Wine Intern during harvest season?

As a Wine Intern during harvest season, your daily tasks are likely to include assisting with grape sorting, operating and cleaning winery equipment, monitoring fermentations, and sampling wines for analysis. You may also help with cellar work such as pump-overs, racking, and barrel maintenance. The pace is often fast and physically demanding, especially during peak harvest, but it's a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in all stages of wine production while working closely with winemakers and cellar teams.

What are Wine Interns?

Wine Interns are entry-level professionals or students who work at wineries, vineyards, or wine production facilities to gain practical experience in the wine industry. Their responsibilities often include assisting with grape harvest, fermentation, bottling, and other aspects of wine production. Wine Interns may also be involved in laboratory analyses, cellar maintenance, and learning about wine tasting and evaluation. These internships are valuable for those looking to build a career in winemaking, viticulture, or wine business. Internships usually take place during harvest season and can vary in length depending on the winery's needs.

  • Clean, sanitize, and sterilize all winery equipment.

  • Perform crush pad operations including grape receival and processing.

Job description

Description
Position at Hartford-Jackson, LLC
Hartford Family Winery was founded in 1994 because of Don and Jennifer Hartford's appreciation for the wines, the people, and the unique vineyards near their Russian River Valley home. Located in the Sonoma County town of Forestville, the winery is about 15 miles from the cool Pacific Coast.
Making delicious wines of high personality is directly related to the difficult locations of our vineyard sources, the limited production of our bottlings and the varietals we use. "Character through adversity" is an expression that we believe applies to people and grapevines and surviving adversity builds character, and personality, in both.
POSITION SUMMARY:
For the harvest months of the year, typically August through October, this candidate will play a crucial role in the production of Hartford wines. The harvest intern will be performing a variety of tasks in the cellar including, but not limited to the following:

  • Cleaning, sanitizing and sterilizing all winery equipment.
  • Crush pad operations - grape receival and processing.
  • Racking and pumping of juice and wine; moving hoses and equipment.
  • Red fermentation management - pump overs, punch-downs, delestage.
  • Additions to juice/wine.
  • Filling barrels.
  • Operating cellar equipment like pumps, presses etc.
  • Forklift operation, moving barrels and case goods.
  • Following and observing all safe cellar practices.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Communicate effectively in English.
  • Great skills in reading, writing and basic math.
  • Reach with hands and arms, sit, walk, climb, stoop and kneel, and be able to regularly lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
  • Individuals selected for this position must be reliable, punctual and have a strong work ethic. Harvest time demands up to six days a week of work including daily overtime.
  • Previous winemaking or cellar experience.
  • Be comfortable with safely entering confined spaces, as well as with heights.
  • Find housing and transportation for the duration of the internship.
  • Ability to lawfully work in the USA.

WAGE TRANSPARENCY:
The base pay for this role ranges from $21.00 - $23.00 per hour. Compensation will be determined by candidate experience, skills, and location.
