What is a Weekend Part 135 SIC Pilot?

A Weekend Part 135 SIC (Second in Command) Pilot is a professional pilot who assists the Captain (PIC) in operating aircraft for charter or on-demand flights governed by FAA Part 135 regulations, typically working on weekends. The SIC helps with flight planning, navigation, communication, and overall safety during flights. This role is crucial for ensuring compliance with safety standards, supporting the Captain, and providing a backup in case the PIC is unable to perform their duties. Weekend SIC pilots often have flexible schedules, focusing on flights that occur during weekends or peak travel times.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Part 135 SIC Pilot, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Part 135 SIC (Second-in-Command) Pilot, you need a commercial pilot certificate with instrument rating, a current second-class medical certificate, and experience meeting FAA Part 135 requirements. Familiarity with avionics systems, flight planning software, and electronic flight bags (EFBs) is essential, and training on specific aircraft types may be required. Strong situational awareness, teamwork, and effective communication skills set outstanding SIC pilots apart. These abilities ensure safe, efficient, and compliant flight operations, especially during variable weekend schedules.
