What are Weekend Advocates?

Weekend Advocates are professionals who provide support, guidance, or representation to individuals or groups during weekends. They often work in social services, crisis intervention, domestic violence shelters, or advocacy organizations, ensuring help and resources are available outside of standard weekday hours. Their responsibilities may include crisis counseling, providing information about services, and connecting clients to resources. Weekend Advocates play a crucial role in ensuring continuous support for people in need, especially during times when regular office staff may not be available.

What are some common challenges Weekend Advocates face when balancing high caseloads with limited weekend resources?

Weekend Advocates often encounter high demand for support services while working with fewer onsite resources compared to weekdays. This can require creative problem-solving and strong time management as you coordinate care, communicate with offsite staff, and handle urgent situations. Building solid relationships with community partners and having a thorough understanding of local resources can help you address clients’ needs efficiently. Collaboration and clear documentation are also crucial for ensuring continuity of care when weekday staff return.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Weekend Advocate, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Weekend Advocate, you typically need experience in crisis intervention, knowledge of community resources, and a background in social work or a related field. Familiarity with case management software, hotline systems, and confidentiality protocols is often required. Strong active listening, emotional resilience, and effective communication skills help advocates support clients in high-stress situations. These competencies ensure that clients receive timely, empathetic assistance and appropriate referrals during critical weekend hours.

Job description

Description:

Rosie’s Place was founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity and find security in their lives.

Over the years, we have become much more than a shelter. We are a multi-service community center that not only provides meals and shelter but also creates answers for thousands of women a year through wide-ranging support, housing and education services. Rosie’s Place relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations and corporations and does not accept any city, state or federal funding.

OPPORTUNITY

Reporting to the Overnight Shelter Manager, the Shelter Advocate provides a welcoming, safe, respectful and dignified atmosphere that engages the guests while keeping them sheltered, safe and healthy. The Shelter Advocate provides overnight guests with culturally inclusive support, assistance and a nurturing environment, consistent with the mission, philosophy and policies of Rosie’s Place.

  • Intervene in guest crises or emergencies in a dignified and respectful manner.
  • Maintain guests’ confidentiality and observe professional boundaries when working with guests.
  • Supervise any volunteers on overnight shifts.
  • Supply stocked items; report a daily inventory log, and complete housekeeping tasks before closing shift.
  • Enter a complete account of shift activity in the Salesforce daily log.
  • Serve as a Front Office Advocate for Rosie’s Place at start of shift by answering phones, directing calls, responding to inquiries, opening the front door—all in a friendly and respectful manner.
  • Manage the guest daily services calendar/schedule. Keep track of all daily services.
  • Perform any additional duties assigned by the Overnight Program Manager.
Requirements:

There are innumerable ways to learn, grow, and excel professionally. We know people gain skills through a variety of professional, personal, educational and volunteer experiences. We respect this when we review applications and take a broad look at the experience of each applicant. We want to get to know you and the unique strengths you will bring to the work. This said, we are most likely to be interested in your candidacy if you can demonstrate the majority of the qualifications and experiences listed below:

  • Minimum 2 years direct service experience working with women who have experienced poverty and homelessness required
  • Strong commitment to social justice and the mission of Rosie’s Place
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English or Haitian Creole/English) strongly preferred
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with the ability to exercise sound judgement and think quickly on your feet
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well and effectively communicate with other department employees.
  • Strong customer service mindset with effective and diplomatic, yet supportive communication style
  • Dependable, flexible and able to work effectively in a collaborative and busy department
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications

Per Rosie’s Place Shift Differential Policy, hours worked on Saturdays and Sundays are compensated at an additional $2 per hour.

WORK EXPECTATIONS

We are a hands-on team and seek employees who are passionate about our work and service to our community. The Overnight Shelter Advocate is expected to work onsite at Rosie’s Place during their work week and engage regularly with staff, guests, and volunteers.
