What is the difference between a graphic designer and a Visual Designer?

A Visual Designer is a role that focuses on creating the overall look and feel of digital products, including user interfaces, branding, and visual storytelling, often requiring skills in UI/UX design and tools like Adobe XD or Figma. A graphic designer typically works on static visual content such as print materials, logos, and marketing collateral. While both roles involve visual creativity, Visual Designers usually work more closely with digital experiences and user-centered design processes.

What is the highest paid designer job?

Senior roles such as Creative Director or Design Director typically have the highest salaries among visual designers, often exceeding six figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, leadership skills, and proficiency with advanced design tools and strategic planning.

How does a Visual Designer typically collaborate with other teams during a project?

Visual Designers frequently collaborate with cross-functional teams such as product managers, UX/UI designers, developers, and marketing specialists. Throughout a project, they participate in brainstorming sessions, provide visual concepts, and iterate on feedback from stakeholders to ensure the final design aligns with both user needs and business goals. Effective communication and adaptability are key, as Visual Designers often need to balance creative vision with technical or brand requirements. This collaborative environment helps ensure cohesive and impactful visual experiences across digital and print platforms.

What are Visual Designers?

Visual Designers are creative professionals who focus on the appearance and aesthetics of digital products, such as websites, mobile apps, and user interfaces. They use typography, color, imagery, and layout to create visually appealing and effective designs that enhance user experience. Visual Designers often collaborate with UX designers, developers, and other team members to ensure the final product is both beautiful and functional. Their work helps communicate a brand’s message and values through visual elements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Visual Designer, you need strong proficiency in graphic design principles, typography, color theory, and a portfolio demonstrating your creative work, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Expertise in industry-standard tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and familiarity with prototyping tools like Figma or Sketch are typically required. Exceptional communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills help Visual Designers work effectively with clients and cross-functional teams. These skills and qualities are crucial for creating compelling visuals that align with brand goals and ensure a seamless user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

AI tools are increasingly used by visual designers to automate repetitive tasks, generate ideas, and enhance creativity. However, AI currently serves as a complement rather than a replacement, as human creativity, critical thinking, and understanding of user experience remain essential in design work. Designers who adapt by learning new tools and skills can leverage AI to improve productivity and innovation.

What Is a Visual Designer?

A visual designer creates designs for clients. Their responsibilities include designing the visual aspects of advertisements, marketing campaigns, and products. Specific job duties vary depending on their employer or clients. For example, they may create product labels, layout print publications, or design web pages. They often meet with clients to determine their needs, collaborate with other graphic designers, create design plans, and submit sketches and project proposals.

Job description

Our Mission:
Happiest Baby is looking for a passionate, highly versatile Graphic Designer to lead visual storytelling across every brand touchpoint. Based in Los Angeles, this individual will be a team of one—supported by external contractors and creative agencies—and will own the full design process from concept to execution.

Your Role:
This role is responsible for developing assets across packaging, website, digital marketing, retail, brand campaigns, and motion content. You’ll collaborate closely with our Founders, Marketing Team, and cross-functional partners to uphold and evolve the brand’s identity. The Graphic Designer supports both our direct-to-consumer (DTC) business and our growing B2B initiatives, including our Employee Benefit Program, Health Partnerships, and Medical Affairs.

This role also owns the development of motion assets—including short-form video, animated ads, and TikTok content—to support performance marketing and brand storytelling across channels.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead Brand Design Direction: Work with Founders, VP Marketing, and Director of Marketing to evolve and uphold the creative vision for Happiest Baby.
  • Own Asset Development Across Channels: Conceptualize, design, and deliver assets for email, paid media, organic social, influencer kits, printed collateral, and retail displays.
  • Motion Design Ownership: Develop and edit motion assets—including animated ads, social videos, and TikToks—that drive engagement and reflect brand tone. Partner with media and content teams to optimize for performance and platform.
  • Packaging Oversight: Own artwork development for all product packaging, partnering with Product, Regulatory, Ops, and external print vendors to ensure accuracy and excellence.
  • Creative Concepting: Develop mood boards, creative wrappers, competitive audits, and other visual strategy tools that bring brand and campaign briefs to life.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work with DTC and B2B teams—including performance marketing, CX, sales, and partnerships—to ensure creative supports business priorities.
  • Website Design: Design PDPs, landing pages, homepage refreshes, and promotional modules; deliver wireframes and visual assets to developers.
  • Vendor & Agency Collaboration: Work closely with our external creative agency, media partners, and production vendors to deliver performance-driven and on-brand assets.
  • Creative Project Management: Manage project timelines, priorities, and production schedules to meet deadlines across multiple departments.
  • Photoshoot & Content Direction: Partner with the Founders and Brand team to concept, plan, and direct brand photoshoots that reflect Happiest Baby’s aesthetic and product benefits.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Present creative concepts and final work to leadership and cross-functional teams, incorporating feedback while maintaining creative integrity.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of graphic design experience, ideally in-house at a consumer brand
  • Expert in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and Canva; strong working knowledge of After Effects, Premiere Pro, or similar tools for motion design.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating multi-channel design work, including packaging, digital marketing, motion/animated assets, and web.
  • Experience designing short-form video or motion content for ads, organic social, and/or TikTok preferred.
  • Experience working across DTC and B2B models preferred
  • Self-starter with exceptional organizational and communication skills
  • Comfortable working independently and cross-functionally in a fast-paced, collaborative environment
Perks:
  • Competitive health, dental, and eyecare plans.
  • 401(k) plan.
  • Generous vacation policy.
  • A friendly office and a dynamic work environment.
  • Being part of a team that's making a meaningful difference in the lives of parents and babies.
