What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Part Time Visual Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Part Time Visual Designer, you need strong graphic design skills, a solid portfolio, and proficiency in visual communication principles, often supported by a relevant degree or coursework. Familiarity with industry-standard design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and basic knowledge of UI/UX or web design systems is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and effective collaboration set standout designers apart in this role. These skills are essential for delivering visually compelling work that aligns with client needs and brand standards while meeting deadlines in a flexible, part-time environment.

What does a Part Time Visual Designer do?

A Part Time Visual Designer is responsible for creating visual elements for digital or print media, such as websites, marketing materials, or product packaging, but works fewer hours than a full-time designer. Their tasks may include designing layouts, selecting colors and fonts, and collaborating with other team members to ensure that visuals align with brand guidelines. Part-time roles are often more flexible, allowing designers to balance work with other commitments. They may work in-house, at an agency, or as freelancers depending on the employer's needs.

Part Time Visual Designers focus on creating visual elements for digital products like websites and apps, emphasizing user experience and interface design. In contrast, Part Time Graphic Designers typically work on print and marketing materials, such as brochures and logos. While both roles require strong design skills, Visual Designers often need knowledge of digital tools and UI principles, making their work environment more digital-centric. Employers in tech and digital agencies frequently hire Visual Designers, whereas Graphic Designers are common in print and advertising sectors.

How does a part-time visual designer typically collaborate with full-time team members on projects?

Part-time visual designers often work closely with full-time designers, project managers, and marketing teams to ensure design consistency and meet project deadlines. Collaboration usually happens through regular check-ins, shared digital workspaces, and feedback sessions. Flexibility and clear communication are essential, as part-time designers may need to coordinate their schedules to align with team meetings and project milestones. This structure allows part-time designers to contribute creatively while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

About Quilt
Quilt is the smartest way to heat and cool your home. As a ductless heat pump with a SEER2 rating of 25 and HSPF2 of 12, Quilt sets a new efficiency standard for residential climate control. Designed by industry veterans from Google, Apple, and Nest, and backed by top climate investors, Quilt combines cutting-edge performance with elegant, architectural design that integrates seamlessly into the home.
Our mission is to move humanity off fossil fuels in the home. We're not just another climate tech company - we're building products people actually want in every room of their house. Check out @meetquilt to see what we're creating.
About this role
Quilt is looking for a junior visual designer to help shape our brand across platforms and audiences. This is a part-time engagement to start, with potential to grow into a full-time role as our needs expand.
Quilt is turning heat pumps into a coveted category, and our visual identity is one of the defining aspects of our young brand (example & example). You'll be contributing to content and experiences that align with our marketing and product strategies, and help us stand out in a category that's overdue for a visual overhaul.
Who you'll work with: a small and mighty design team that collaborates cross-functionally with the entire Quilt org - from marketing and sales to hardware and everything in between - to drive customer and partner-focused designs that cohesively communicate our brand message and values.
What you'll do
  • Support design projects from concept to completion across platforms and mediums, including social, paid media, digital, print, and video
  • Collaborate with marketing, partner success, UX, and product to develop and design multi-channel marketing campaigns
  • Review co-branded marketing materials from partners nationwide and provide actionable feedback to align with Quilt's brand guidelines and visual standards
  • Help maintain and grow our brand guidelines, ensuring consistent implementation across channels
  • Contribute to brand strategy as our visual identity continues to evolve across a budding product ecosystem

You qualify if you have
  • A strong portfolio showcasing visual design skills across mediums - quality of work matters more than years of experience
  • Exceptional attention to detail: pixel-perfect execution, consistency, and craft are central to this role
  • Strong core design skills - typography, layout, color, and composition
  • Familiarity with brand guidelines and design systems
  • Experience designing across marketing channels such as web, email, and social
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively with a cross-disciplinary team
  • Experience or interest in video and photo editing is a plus

You'll thrive in this role if you
  • Sweat the small stuff - you notice when something is 2px off and it bothers you
  • Are scrappy, thrive in a fast-paced startup environment, and adapt quickly to changing priorities
  • Delight in being fast and flexible in early design stages, and precise and polished at the finish line
  • Are radically learning-focused, with a growth mindset and eagerness to improve your craft
  • Love to experiment with new techniques, tools, and technologies
  • Would like to fight climate change AND make beautiful things

This is a part-time, hybrid position - 15 to 20 hours a week, with at least one day per week in our Redwood City office. The expected hourly rate is $40 - $60, based on experience.
To apply, submit:
