HED | IDEAS โ€“ Interior Design Intern

HED | IDEAS (Intern Development for Engineering and Architecture Students) is an approximate 10-week program that provides aspiring A/E professionals real-world work experiences that introduces them to the many diverse components of an A/E firm. The experience is intended to complement and support their academic learning experience.

Interns contribute to one or more of HEDโ€™s nine market sectors. Project work exposure can vary, from planning and concept development, through design and production and construction administration. Interns also attend a series of workshops that provide introductions to the intricacies of integrated practice, project management, programming, business development and marketing, all crucial to the successful operations of an A/E firm.

Interns at HED harness their critical thinking skills, enthusiasm, innovation, passion, energy, and curiosity to make a positive impact through design excellence and contributing to making the world a better place. They thrive in a collaborative and hybrid work environment that embraces authenticity, discipline, growth, change and making a mark on the world.

Position Summary:

As an Interior Design Intern at HED, you are beginning your professional experience by contributing to interior design projects through research, documentation, and creative support. Working under direct supervision, you assist project teams with day-to-day design tasks while gaining exposure to an integrated design environment. This role is designed to provide hands-on learning that complements academic training, preparing you for a future role in professional interior design practice.

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with material research, product sourcing, and FF&E documentation.
  • Support design team with drafting, redlines, and updates to presentation materials.
  • Participate in internal team meetings and take notes for reference and coordination.
  • Create visual assets such as diagrams, material boards, or renderings under guidance.
  • Help maintain sample library and organize digital reference files.
  • Observe and learn Revit workflows and coordination with architectural teams.
  • Seek feedback and ask questions to support professional development.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelorโ€™s or Masterโ€™s program in Interior Design or Interior Architecture.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and familiarity with Revit or other design software.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Enthusiastic attitude, curiosity, and collaborative mindset.
  • Portfolio or coursework samples that demonstrate creativity and foundational skills. Attaching a portfolio is required for consideration.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to effectively communicate in writing and verbally via phone, video conferencing, and in person.
  • Must be able to assist with field verification and site visits.
  • Visual acuity to perform responsibilities.
