Job description

Position Summary
  • Advocate for veterans and their immediate families or survivors to ensure receipt of benefits available from the US Department of Veterans Affairs including but not limited to, Service Disability Claims, VA Pension Claims, Survivor Claims, Education Benefits, employment training, and Healthcare. Advocate for veterans and their immediate families or survivors with Local, State, and other Federal assistance including but not limited to; Veterans Financial Assistance, Military Service Organization Assistance, Utilities Assistance Programs, Homeowner Assistance Programs, Homeless Assistance Programs, Family Medical Assistance Programs, Social Security, and other non-veteran specific programs based on the needs of the veteran and the family.

Essential Job Duties
  • Interview veterans, spouses, and dependents to determine eligibility for federal, state, and local benefits and assure maximum benefits are received
  • Serve as a liaison with federal, state, county, and private sector agencies and providers to establish veteran benefit entitlements
  • Review legislation, regulations, precedents, and veterans' medical reports and history to evaluate and determine validity of claims
  • Obtain claimants' power of attorney and prepare claim forms, briefs, and assemble pertinent evidence
  • Request hearings before government boards and present briefs
  • Review government board decisions for grounds for appeal
  • Advise veterans on insurance, vocational, and other matters in cooperation with the United States Department of Veterans Affairs and other agencies
  • Prepare bulletins and correspondence to inform others of current activities and legislation
  • Participate in or initiate civic functions to inform the public of services rendered and rights and benefits of veterans and dependents
  • Additional duties as assigned

Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent with 0-3 years of experience
  • Experience in sales, public relations, welfare work, benefit administration, or other work involving extensive public contact preferred
  • Customer service experience preferred
  • A veteran who has been honorably discharged from service in the Armed Forces of the United States preferred

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with veterans, families, and agency representatives
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality with sensitive information and records
  • Proficient in organization and record keeping, with attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks with interruptions and work with little supervision
  • Ability to elicit information from irate, upset, or anxious individuals in a professional manner
  • Proficient in the use of office equipment including computers, multi-line phones, fax machines, and copiers
  • Ability to read, analyze, evaluate, and interpret documents such as financial reports, legal documents, and regulations
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence and communicate in an effective and persuasive manner
  • Ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions
  • The employee must be capable of responding to common inquiries or complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • The employee shall possess the ability to work with limited supervision.
  • The employee must be proficient in the use of various computer programs including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, Tyler and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals preferred
