Job description

The Medical Surgical department at San Luis Valley Health is seeking full-time Unit Secretary & Telemetry Tech. This position will perform include answering calls, monitoring and recognizing abnormal telemetry rhythms for all telemetry patients as well as monitoring vital signs and pulse oximetry for patients, printing and posting telemetry strips, recording admitting and discharging times, ordering and stocking supplies, charting patient information in electronic health records. The Unit Secretary/Telemetry Technician will keep the unit organized and be a main source of communication between the nurses, EMTs, Physicians, patients, and family members.

What You'll Need:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Computer skills and data entry
  • General office experience using computer, printer, telephone, copy and fax machines
  • Ability to problem solve and work under pressure in a loud, rapidly changing environment

What You'll Do:

  • Greets patients/visitors in a courteous, welcoming manner.
  • Responsible to ensure patient understands and signs all required forms as it pertains to the patientโ€™s admission.
  • Arrange discharges by notifying receiving facility and patient transporter service.
  • Maintains unit operations by following policies and procedures, reporting needed changes.
  • Ensures Census board and nursesโ€™ notes are updated and accurate
  • Follows transfer protocol and assists charge nurse with transfer coordination
  • Follows established procedures for arranging hospital admissions/discharges including times and department route or discharge disposition and time.
  • Telemetry strips as required per level of care, Tele Book
  • Conserves unit resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results.
  • Responsible to ensure patients with telemetry orders are being monitored continuously, by calling the nursing unit when a telemetry signal is lost to ascertain why the patient is off telemetry. Involve the charge nurse and escalate to a nurse manager or director when telemetry patients are off for an extended period without an order.
  • Monitor O2 and HR on Cap20. Notify RN of abnormal or loss of reading.
  • Tracks telemetry units upon discharge or discontinuation of telemetry orders. Notifies charge nurse when telemetry unit is missing.
  • Performs supply counts and communicates weekly order of supplies, distribution of department supplies.
  • Maintains patient confidence and protects hospital operations by keeping confidential information. Broad understanding of HIPAA.
