The Transportation Manager contributes to the success of Univar Solutions by acting as the primary Transportation leader at a branch location within a defined District and managing the P&L.
The TM provides Transportation leadership at the assigned branch encompassing both private fleet and common carrier modes. Leads a team of supervisors, dispatchers, and drivers and collaborates with the Operations Manager, Commercial leadership, and District Transportation Manager.
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
General & People Management
  • Accountable for the safe, effective, and efficient execution of the branch
  • Transportation operation to include delivering the assigned annual operating plan and cost savings objectives
  • Develop and manage after-hours Transportation support for the branch location
  • Manage the execution of retention and recruiting strategies for the private fleet drivers within the branch
  • Manage and develop the Transportation Supervisor and Dispatcher
  • Responsible for all disciplinary and coaching of Transportation employees at the branch
  • Accountable for the weekly submission and accuracy of hourly payroll
  • Responsible for the collective bargaining of Transportation drivers at unionized sites (if applicable)

Private Fleet Dispatch Optimization
  • Directly responsible for maintaining an efficient cost advantaged company private fleet at a branch location
  • Maximize driver DOT HOS
  • Manage execution of route plans to reduce regional Cost Per Mile (CPM) on private fleets
  • Mode mix and management
  • Coach safe and efficient driving techniques; ensuring safety, regulatory and DOT compliance
  • Develop effective relationships with internal business partners

Route Guide and Lane Management
  • Manages the execution of lane level sourcing of the Private, Common, and dedicated fleets at the branch
  • Provide interface and direction for common carriers on issues and improvement
  • Implements strategies for on-time delivery performance for company owned private fleet and carriers alike
  • Ensures compliance to established route guides

Capacity Management
  • Manage and maintain transportation capacity sufficient to support a 20% surge in volume using private fleet, common carrier, or dedicated carrier solutions
  • Ensure carrier execution against transportation requirements, meeting requirements of customers
  • Collaborate with other DTMs within the region for any dedicated capacity needs to ensure capacity requirements for the branch

Asset Utilization
  • Manage local Transportation team and provide guidance to Transportation supervisor(s) and dispatchers on the effective and efficient use of the private fleet
  • Deliver transportation productivity agenda by focusing on asset optimization, improving fuel economy, maximizing DOT HOS, reducing reliance on CC capacity, payload efficiency, route optimization & wait time reduction
  • Deliver transportation service targets, shipping and delivering loads on time
  • Develop, and implement capital replacement needs for all private fleet assets within the branch
  • Assist in the development of and accountable for delivering plans that ensure the efficient gains in asset utilization within the branch
  • Support of the annual procurement bid and bid readiness
  • Development of the right portfolio of carriers for the branch to ensure adequate capacity availability at costs that deliver against our AOP

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
  • Bachelor's Degree, required
  • Master's Degree, preferred
  • Minimum of 7 years of logistics/Transportation/supply-chain experience
  • Experience in HAZMAT and tanker transportation operations strongly desired
  • Previous experience in distribution environment preferred.
  • Multi-modal Transportation experience including TL and LTL, as well as legal, regulatory, and operational issues, including customer service, logistics and carrier operations.
  • Multi-year experience managing private fleets with demonstrated efficiency and effectiveness
  • Experience in managing direct reports and indirect reports
  • Budgeting (P&L) experience
  • Working knowledge of DOT rules and regulations
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Ability to influence across internal/external functions.
  • Demonstrated drive for results and sense of urgency; ability to prioritize and address conflict constructively/problem-solve in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Strong analytical and negotiating skills.
  • Ability to lead and manage process change and organizational change
  • Highly effective collaboration between operations, transportation planning, and commercial critical
  • Detailed operational and tactical knowledge of how to maximize private fleet efficiencies coupled with exceptionally strong interpersonal and influencing skills are critical for success
  • Strong fleet dispatching experience

PAY & BENEFITS:
  • The salary range for this position is $106,060 - $120,000 annually.
  • The specific salary offered to a candidate may be influenced by a variety of factors including the candidate's relevant experience, education, training, certifications, qualifications, and work location
