GENERAL SUMMARY

Under general direction of the Transportation Director/Assistant Superintendent, provides direction and management oversight to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the transportation department including: developing and implementing efficient routes utilizing a computer-based bus routing system, directing and managing district's transportation and vehicle maintenance program,determines needed repairs and/or replacements on the District's transportation fleet and maintenance vehicles; ensures the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition; provides written documentation of repairs to meet district, state and federal requirements, performs all functions in a cost-effective and efficient manner, and assisting the business office with budgeting and planning of equipment replacement.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Depending upon the individual assignment, the individual may perform all or a combination of the following:

1. Recruit, train, and supervise qualified drivers for regular daily bus routes and activity trips.
2. Design safe and efficient bus routes and review school bus routes throughout the year, making modifications when necessary.
3. Provide scheduling of all regular daily bus routes and enlist substitute drivers as needed.
4. Coordinate with Athletic Directors to schedule drivers and vehicles for all athletic trips.
5. Coordinate all other extracurricular activities and field trips for the district with the building principals, teachers and secretaries.
6. Maintain records for all athletic, activity and field trips and shuttles.
7. Oversee bus shop operation, including preventive maintenance, pre-trip inspections, parts inventory, record keeping, state inspections, etc.
8. Supervise, monitor and evaluate the performance of bus drivers, monitors, and mechanic, maintaining employee records and documenting deficiencies when necessary.
9. Approve timesheets for transportation staff.
10. Communicate with transportation staff, administrators, and parents to answer questions and resolve conflicts, facilitate conferences when necessary.
11. Investigate school bus incidents/accidents and file necessary reports.
12. Prepare and submit the annual Claim for Pupil Transportation to ISBE.
13. Make recommendations to the transportation director as to transportation needs and replacement schedules for all district vehicles.
14. Diagnose potential vehicle and equipment malfunctions for the purpose of determining needed repairs and/or replacements.
15. Execute preventive maintenance programs for the purpose of maintaining vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition.
16. Maintain tools, equipment and shop area for the purpose of ensuring the availability and functioning of required tools and equipment within a safe work area.
17. Prepare documentation (e.g. repairs, maintenance records, etc.) for the purpose of providing written support and/or information to comply with regulating guidelines.
18. Repair vehicle and equipment systems/components, etc. for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition.
19. Replace defective vehicle and equipment parts/systems for the purpose of ensuring the availability of vehicles and equipment in safe operating condition.
20. Inspect vehicles for the purpose of ensuring conformance to IDOT and other state standards
21. Adhere to applicable state and federal laws, rules and regulations, board policies and administrative rules.

Assists other district personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Knowledge of fleet routing and planning software (VersaTrans, Edulog a plus)
2. Knowledge of applicable federal, state and local laws, procedures and regulations
3. Proficiency with spreadsheet, word processing software
4. Ability to communicate effectively
5. Ability to effect change and motivate staff in support of district goals and objectives
6. Ability to design, develop, implement, direct, review and evaluate the development and implementation of safe and efficient routes in support of district goals and objectives
7. Ability to analyze areas of improvement for transportation and bus maintenance; provide solutions and future direction in support of plan and district goals and objectives
8. Ability to analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions and implement recommendations in support of district goals and objectives

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Hearing and speaking to exchange information in person and on the telephone; seeing to conduct inspections, read, prepare and proofread documents; sitting or standing for extended periods of time; dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other equipment; kneeling, bending at the waist and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store supplies;  lifting heavy objects up to 50 pounds.  The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
