What is test development?

Test development is the process of designing, creating, and validating assessment tools such as exams, quizzes, or standardized tests. This process involves defining the purpose of the test, constructing test items, reviewing them for quality, and conducting statistical analyses to ensure reliability and validity. Test developers often work in educational, psychological, or professional certification contexts to measure knowledge, skills, or abilities accurately. The goal is to create fair, unbiased tests that provide meaningful information about the test takers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in test development?

To excel in Test Development, strong analytical skills, a background in educational measurement or psychometrics, and a relevant degree such as education, psychology, or statistics are essential. Familiarity with test authoring platforms, statistical analysis software (like SPSS or R), and knowledge of standards such as item response theory (IRT) are typically required. Attention to detail, critical thinking, and effective collaboration are key soft skills for designing fair and valid assessments. These skills ensure the creation of reliable, unbiased, and meaningful tests that accurately measure intended outcomes.

What are some common challenges faced in a test development role, and how can they be addressed?

One common challenge in Test Development is ensuring that assessments are both valid and reliable while meeting tight deadlines. Balancing subject matter expertise with psychometric principles can also be demanding, particularly when collaborating with content experts and statisticians. Clear communication, careful project planning, and continuous professional development help address these challenges. Additionally, staying updated on assessment standards and using feedback from pilot tests can greatly improve test quality.

What is the difference between Test Development vs Test Analysis?

AspectTest DevelopmentTest Analysis
Primary FocusDesigning and creating tests and assessmentsInterpreting test results and analyzing data
Required SkillsCurriculum design, item writing, psychometricsData analysis, statistical skills, reporting
Work EnvironmentEducational institutions, testing companiesResearch organizations, educational settings
CertificationsPsychometric certifications often preferredData analysis or psychometric certifications

Test Development focuses on creating assessments, while Test Analysis involves interpreting results and analyzing data. Both roles are essential in the testing industry, often working together to ensure valid and reliable assessments.

Position: Manager, Test Development Engineering

Location: Etters, PA

Amphenol High Speed Products Group is the market leader for high speed, high bandwidth electrical connectors for the Telecom/Datacom market (Mobile Networks, Storage, Servers, Routers, Switches, etc.). Our products help to enable the electronics revolution and remain a key enabler for major Tier 1 OEMs globally. We have design, sales, and manufacturing locations globally and are currently seeking a Manager, Test Development Engineering to join our Cable Backplane Systems team located in Etters, PA.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Manager of Test Development Engineering leads test development execution for assigned Cable Backplane Systems (CBS) programs and teams, accountable for developing, validating, deploying, and sustaining scalable, production-ready test solutions across new product introduction (NPI) and manufacturing.

The position partners closely with Product Engineering, Signal Integrity, Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Operations, Quality, Supply Chain, Customer Engineering, site teams, and strategic customers to ensure test capability supports product performance, accelerated launch, manufacturing readiness, quality, capacity, and long-term production support.

The successful candidate combines strong technical expertise in high-speed interconnect testing with people leadership, program execution, cross-functional collaboration, and disciplined test-system governance. The role is responsible for consistent architecture, documentation, readiness, calibration, configuration control, and performance of test solutions within the assigned organization.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Test Solution Development and NPI Readiness

  • Lead end-to-end development of electrical, functional, and manufacturing test solutions from concept and architecture through qualification, production release, and sustaining support.
  • Drive test readiness into NPI program gates with clear ownership of technical performance, schedule, risk retirement, validation, and production launch deliverables.
  • Develop and maintain standards for test coverage, correlation, repeatability, calibration, measurement accuracy, reliability, and data integrity.
  • Ensure robust transfer to manufacturing through complete documentation, training, spare-parts planning, maintenance requirements, and escalation support.

Technology and Platform Leadership

  • Lead architecture, design, validation, and deployment of automated test equipment (ATE), BERT, VNA, oscilloscope, fixture, interface, software, and data-system solutions within assigned programs.
  • Support technology roadmaps for next-generation electrical and optical test methods, including 224G/448G PAM4, high-speed channel validation, automation, analytics, AI-assisted optimization, and test software modernization.
  • Partner with Product Engineering and Signal Integrity Engineering to establish design-for-test (DFT), validation, and correlation methods for emerging products.
  • Drive modularity, reuse, and common test platforms to reduce development lead time, cost, complexity, and support burden across programs and manufacturing sites.

Operational Governance and Manufacturing Performance

  • Implement and maintain disciplined operating practices for NPI and manufacturing test systems, including preventive maintenance, calibration, change logs, configuration control, equipment lifecycle management, and readiness reviews.
  • Monitor and improve key test performance measures such as on-time readiness, first-pass yield, test escapes, measurement-system capability, station uptime, capacity, utilization, and cost of test.
